Robertson
Give Robertson one night as a Southern Highlands stop: half a day for the Big Potato, the falls and a pie, then drive on. No car, no trip.
Robertson sits at the top of the Illawarra escarpment, about 1 h 45 min from Sydney and 30 min from Bowral. It is dairy and potato country with mist, rain and green hills, and its sights are split between the town strip and the escarpment lookouts and waterfalls west of it. Most travellers use it as a half-day or one-night stop on a Southern Highlands loop, not a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No local buses or taxis: without a car you are limited to the town strip.
- The escarpment lookouts and waterfalls sit on unlit rural roads with wildlife at dusk: drive them in daylight.
- Summer flies are heavy on farmland walks.
- Winter brings mist and showery rain that can cut visibility on Macquarie Pass.
A small, quiet town and one of the safer stops in the region. The real risks are rural roads at dusk with wildlife, wet escarpment lookouts, and having no transport if you arrive without a car.
