The Rio Grande Valley is four counties of flat delta at Texas's southern tip, not a valley. It is a winter-sun and birding region: warm days from November to March, citrus groves, palm-lined towns and a coast at South Padre Island about 40–80 minutes east of the inland cities. A car is the practical way to move; distances between McAllen, Harlingen and Brownsville are 30–60 minutes. Sleep inland for food and shopping, or on the coast for beach and fishing.
