Rio de Janeiro
Rio works on a beach-and-viewpoint rhythm: go up the mountains early before the cloud, keep the beach for mid-morning, and take a licensed car or app at night instead of walking.
Rio's sights are spread between mountains and bays, so distance is not the trouble: cloud on the peaks, queues at the lifts, and phone theft on crowded beaches and buses are. Five walking clusters cover a first visit; the two trips that decide the plan are Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf, and both need a clear-sky morning. Keep one bed in Copacabana or Ipanema and go out from it by app car.

Essentials
- Currency
- BRL
- Money
- Cards and tap-to-pay work almost everywhere; keep R$100 in small notes for kiosks, and use ATMs inside banks or malls in daytime.
- Daily spend
- Budget R$250–450 excl. bed · Mid R$450–900 excl. bed · High R$900+ excl. bed (estimate; check)
- SIM and data
- Vivo, Claro and TIM cover the country; buying a prepaid SIM needs a passport and sometimes a CPF — an eSIM before you fly is easier.
- Emergency
- Police 190 · Ambulance (SAMU) 192 · Fire 193 · Civil defence (floods 199 · Tourist police Rio (DEAT) +55 21 2332-2924 — check
- Plugs
- Types N, C · 127 V (Rio, São Paulo) or 220 V (Brasília, much of the Northeast) · Check the voltage on the socket; most chargers are dual-voltage.
- Tipping
- Restaurant: 10% service (serviço) usually on the bill; optional but normal.; Beach kiosk / bar: Often included; round up.; Taxi / Uber: Not expected; round up.; Guide: US$5–15 per person per day.; Hotel staff: Small tip for porters.
- Water
- Do not drink tap water; filtered water is provided in most homes and hotels.
- Toilets
- Put toilet paper in the bin, not the toilet, in most places.
Get in
By air
- Rio de Janeiro–Galeão International Airport (GIG)
- GIG to Copacabana or Ipanema: one app car or official taxi, 45–90 minutes depending on traffic; the risk is the traffic at rush hour and drivers who approach you in the hall.
Get around
Walk inside a cluster; ride-hailing car (Uber, 99) between clusters, especially after dark.
- Passes
- No pass. The metro is fast between Zona Sul and the centre in daytime; a car ride between clusters is usually a few minutes and cheap.
- Late at night
- The metro closes overnight (check the operator's hours); ride-hailing runs all night.
See and do
01Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor)Cristo Redentor
Book the first Corcovado train on a clear morning; cloud on the summit hides the statue by mid-morning, and the queue at the top is the slowest part.
02Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar)Pão de Açúcar
Go up early on a clear day: cloud arrives from mid-morning and the queues grow, so book a timed ticket and check the weather before you leave.
03Arpoador RockPedra do Arpoador
The sunset rock between Ipanema and Copacabana: go 45 minutes before the sun goes down, take a car back, and do not leave valuables in a bag on the rocks.
04Copacabana promenade and beachCalçadão de Copacabana
A flat two-kilometre promenade and beach: walk it in the morning, swim near lifeguards, and keep the phone out of sight.
05Escadaria Selarón (Selarón Steps)Escadaria Selarón
Ten to twenty minutes on the tiled steps in daylight: photograph, then leave by car; avoid the side streets and evenings.
Hours and prices are desk estimates (checked 2026-09); anything marked (check) is not confirmed. Coordinates open in any map app.
Eat
- Bar Brasil
- A long-running Lapa bar and restaurant for lunch after the Selarón steps: go at midday, not late evening, and take a car afterwards.
- Casa da Feijoada
- A sit-down lunch of feijoada, the black-bean and pork stew: go at 12:30–14:00 and book a table in high season.
Sleep
- Copacabana
- First-timers: the metro, the beach and many restaurants are at the door; choose a hotel with a 24-hour desk one or two blocks off Avenida Atlântica.
- Ipanema
- Quieter and pricier: better restaurants, safe-feeling streets after dark and the sunset rock a walk away; the metro is 10 minutes on foot.
Language
Brazilians speak Portuguese, and Spanish is not a substitute, though many understand it when spoken slowly. English is limited outside upscale hotels and tours. A few Portuguese phrases change how you are treated.
- The thumbs-up is used for everything; the OK hand sign is rude.
- Download offline Portuguese in your translation app.
Etiquette, safety and scams

- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights

Scams (Brazil page)
- Phone snatching (arrastão, bike thieves): Keep phones away at the kerb and on the sand; carry a spare phone.
- Fake e-visa sites: Only brazil.vfsevisa.com; lookalikes charge double.
- Card cloning and switched machines: Keep the card in view; check the amount; use tap-to-pay.
- Dating-app set-ups and drink spiking: Meet in public, buy your own drinks, tell someone where you are.
- Express kidnapping: Use apps, avoid flashing valuables and street ATMs at night.
