Rijeka
Give Rijeka 1–2 nights as a Kvarner base: Korzo and the market in half a day, Trsat in the other half, then ferries to the islands.
Rijeka is Croatia's main port and its third-largest city, built around a working harbour rather than a beach. The old centre is compact and walkable, Trsat sits on the hill above, and ferries and buses reach Krk, Cres, Rab and the rest of Kvarner. It is a practical base and a real city, not a resort: come for one or two nights, or use it as a transport hub on the way to the islands.

Get around
The centre is walkable and Korzo is traffic-free. Local buses run circular routes through the centre and out to Trsat (lines #2 and #8 are the useful ones); single tickets from the driver are cash only, day tickets from Tisak and iNovine kiosks. Taxis around town are usually under €10. Ferries leave from the passenger terminal in the centre.
