Rijeka Crnojevica
Half-day stop between Podgorica and the coast: see the old bridge, swim in Lake Skadar and walk to the Pavlova Strana viewpoint. Not a base — one night max if you want a quiet lake evening.
Rijeka Crnojevica is a tiny historic town on the old trade route through Central Montenegro, right on Lake Skadar. Its appeal is the lake scenery, the abandoned stone architecture and the Pavlova Strana viewpoint — one of the best views in the country. Most travellers pass through on the way between Podgorica and the coast; there is little to do beyond the lake and the old bridge, so half a day is enough unless you want a quiet night by the water.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'dobar dan'; avoid: Rushing straight to business
- Pace: Accept slow service and long coffees; avoid: Snapping fingers at waiters
- Churches and monasteries: Covered shoulders and knees; avoid: Swimwear, loud talk
- Conversation: Nature, food, history of the bay; avoid: Declaring Montenegrins to be Serbs (or the reverse)
Scams and watch-outs
- No buses run from Rijeka Crnojevica back to Podgorica: you must walk to the main road (Metirizi stop) and flag a bus.
- The lakeside campsite is flooded from November until May.
- Water snakes in the lake are harmless — hundreds of them, but they won't bother you.
- Lily pads: swim around them, not through them.
Very safe. The only real risks are the flooded campsite in winter and the harmless water snakes (don't panic). Watch for traffic on the main road when hitching or walking.
