Rieti

Give Rieti one full day and one night if you are already in Rome or Lazio; skip it as a standalone destination on a first Italy trip.

Rieti is a small Lazio city of about 47,500 people, 75 km northeast of Rome, sitting on a hill above the Velino River and the Rieti Plain. It has no single headline monument, but a compact medieval centre, a well-preserved 13th-century wall, a Romanesque cathedral and a fast athletics track that has hosted world records. Most visitors come from Rome for a weekend. The train link is slow and closes for about a month in late summer; the COTRAL bus is the practical way in.

Get around

The medieval centre is small and walkable; leave the car outside the walls because parking inside is limited and the old town has a ZTL. ASM urban buses cover the suburbs and nearby sites (line 333 to Fonte Colombo, 114 to La Foresta, 513 to Mount Terminillo); a single ride is about €0.90 (check). The ASM bus station is south of the centre, about 150 m from the Roman Bridge.

  • Greeting: Say buongiorno (until mid-afternoon) or buonasera on entering shops and bars; avoid: Walking in and pointing without a greeting

Scams and watch-outs

  • The Rieti railway line closes from the end of July to the end of August each year; trains are replaced by slower buses.
  • There is no railway to Rome: the only train line runs to Terni or L'Aquila, and the Rome–Rieti train requires a change at Terni.
  • The St. Peter the Martyr Oratory and Blessed Colomba cloister sit inside an army barracks and are only open on special occasions such as FAI days.
  • Locals are called reatini, not rietini; getting it wrong is noticed.
  • The old town has a ZTL; driving into it without a permit risks a camera fine.

Rieti is a quiet, low-crime city and generally safe for tourists; the main risks are summer heat, uneven medieval paving, and the ZTL camera zone if you drive into the old town.
