Ridgefield
Ridgefield, Connecticut
Give Ridgefield one full day on a Fairfield County loop: Main Street, the Aldrich and Ballard Park. Sleep elsewhere unless you want a country inn.
Ridgefield is a colonial hill town of about 25,000 people in inland Fairfield County, roughly 1 h 40 min by train from Grand Central via the Branchville station on the Danbury branch. It is a walkable Main Street with one serious art museum, a summer concert park and two historic inns. Most travellers see it as a half-day or day stop between Danbury and the coast rather than a base.

Get around
The village centre is walkable in 10–15 min end to end. Everything else — Branchville station, the inns on West Lane, the Danbury line — needs a car or a rideshare. There is no useful local bus for visitors. Speed limits are enforced closely on Route 7 and the town roads.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Speed traps are common on Route 7 and the town roads: stay at or below the posted limit.
- Metro-North's Danbury branch is a shuttle connection, not a through train: check the transfer at South Norwalk or Stamford.
- Leaf-peeping weekends in October fill the roads and the inns; book ahead.
- Many Main Street shops and the museum close on Mondays; check hours before you drive out.
A low-crime, well-off small town; the real risks are deer on the roads at dusk, ice on the pavements in winter and speed enforcement on Route 7.
