Skip Richmond as a base unless you have a car and want woods, not coast: 1 night, or a half-day stop for Arcadia trails on the drive between Providence and Westerly.
Richmond is a rural inland town in Washington County, about 35 mi (56 km) south-southwest of Providence, spread across villages such as Wyoming, Hope Valley, Carolina and Kenyon. It has no town centre to walk, no beach and no rail station: I-95 exits 3A and 3B put you on RI 138, and everything else needs a car. What it does have is public land — the 14,000-acre Arcadia Management Area and the 2,359-acre Carolina Management Area — plus the Washington County Fair each August. Most travellers sleep on the coast in Narragansett or Westerly and use Richmond for a morning of hiking, fishing or kayaking.

Get around
A car is required. I-95 runs through town; exits 3A and 3B both put you on RI 138. RI 138, RI 3 and RI 112 are the three main roads: 138 east to South Kingstown and URI, 138 west into Hopkinton, 3 north to Exeter and West Greenwich, 112 south into Charlestown. RIPTA serves a park-and-ride off RI 138 near I-95, but buses will not get you to the trailheads. Fuel up in Wyoming before heading into Arcadia — services inside the management areas are minimal.
