Richards Bay
Skip Richards Bay as a base unless you need the harbour or a watersports stop: one night for a layover, or a day-trip from Durban (2 h drive) for the beach and nature reserve.
Richards Bay is a working harbour town on the KwaZulu-Natal coast, 2 hours north of Durban. It has a long beach, a lagoon for watersports, and the Enseleni Nature Reserve nearby, but most travellers use it as a gateway to Zululand game parks rather than a destination itself. One night covers the essentials; more than that needs a specific activity like fishing or golf.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say hello and ask how someone is before any request; avoid: Launching straight into a question
- Handshakes: Three-part African handshake with friends; a normal handshake with strangers; avoid: Refusing an offered hand
- Elders: Use Mr/Mrs or 'Mama', 'Baba' respectfully in townships and rural areas; avoid: First names with older people you have just met
- Braai invitations: Bring meat or drinks, and arrive on 'African time'; avoid: Taking over the fire
- Photos: Ask first, especially in townships and villages; avoid: Photographing children without a parent's permission
- Politics and race: Ask questions and listen; avoid: Lecturing on history or crime
Scams and watch-outs
- The harbour is industrial: swimming is only at Alkantstrand Beach, not in the port area.
- Hippos and crocodiles live in the lagoon and golf course: keep a safe distance, especially at dusk.
- Minibus taxis stop anywhere and have no fixed schedule; agree the fare before boarding.
Richards Bay is generally safe for tourists, but the harbour area is industrial and empty at night. Stick to the beach and waterfront after dark. Car guards and fuel attendants expect R5–20.
