Rhyd Ddu
Base here 1–2 nights only if you are walking Snowdon or the Nantlle Ridge; otherwise pass through on the Welsh Highland Railway.
Rhyd Ddu is a hamlet of a few dozen people in Snowdonia National Park, on the A4085 between Caernarfon and Beddgelert. It exists for walkers: the Rhyd Ddu Path up Snowdon starts in the village, the Snowdon Ranger Path starts a mile north, and the Nantlle Ridge runs west. There is no shop, one pub and a tea room, so treat it as a trailhead with beds, not a town.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No shop in the village: buy food in Caernarfon or Beddgelert before you arrive.
- Mountain weather turns fast; carry a map, compass and waterproofs even on the Rhyd Ddu Path.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the Nantlle Valley and on the ridge.
- Dorothea Quarry is a flooded, very deep former slate pit with a record of diving deaths: do not swim or dive there casually.
- The Cwellyn Arms campsite allows fires only in the fire pits provided.
Low crime, real mountain risk. The hazards are weather, navigation and fatigue on Snowdon and the Nantlle Ridge, plus cold water at Dorothea Quarry and Llyn Cwellyn: tell someone your route and carry a charged phone.
