Give Renmark one night, two if you paddle: a river town on the Sturt Highway, 3 h from Adelaide, best as a Riverland stop between Adelaide and Mildura.
Renmark is a Riverland service town of about 4,700 people on the Murray, the centre of an irrigated fruit-growing district and the eastern gateway to South Australia's river country. Almost everything a visitor does here is on or beside the water: a riverfront walk, a lookout over limestone cliffs, a paddle on the Ral Ral creek loop, a distillery and a pub. It is a one-night stop on the Adelaide–Mildura drive, not a destination in itself, and it is car-centric: without a car you see the main street and little else.

Get around
A car is the practical answer: sights such as Heading Cliffs and the Rotary lookout are outside town and the local bus network is built for residents, not visitors. In the centre you can walk Murray Avenue end to end in about 15 minutes. Bring a car or plan on taxis.

- Riverland Pest Free Area: you cannot carry fruit or vegetables into the region. Eat or bin them before the quarantine checkpoint on the Sturt Highway; the checkpoint can add up to 15 minutes.
- Summer heat: 40 °C days are normal in January and February. Do river and lookout activities before 10:00 or after 17:00.
- The Kuerschner Boardwalk floods and was closed as of late 2025: check before you walk out.
- No direct coach from Mildura, and coaches from Adelaide do not allow a same-day return: check timetables before you build a day trip around them.
- Fuel and food gaps: the next sizeable town west is Berri, about 15 minutes away; fill up before long river-road detours.
Renmark is a small, quiet country town and violent crime is rare; the real risks are heat, long unsealed river roads, swimming in a fast Murray current and wildlife on the highway at dusk.
