Reggane
رقان
Skip unless you have a specific reason (nuclear-test history or a stop on the N6). Half a day covers the town; no commercial flights.
Reggane is a small Saharan town of about 20,000 people, 150 km south of Adrar on the N6 highway. Its main draw is the French nuclear-test history from the 1960s. The town has two mosques and a compact walkable centre. Most travellers pass through on the way to Tamanrasset or Timimoun rather than making it a destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'salam'; hand on heart; avoid: Offering to shake a woman's hand first
- Dress: Long trousers and covered shoulders; avoid: Shorts in towns
- Checkpoints: Calm, patient, passport ready; avoid: Photos or arguing
- Hospitality: Accept coffee and dates; avoid: Rushing off
Scams and watch-outs
- Extreme summer heat: carry water, cover skin and avoid midday sun.
- French nuclear test sites are off-limits or require special permission; do not attempt to visit without a guide and authorisation.
- Police and gendarmerie checkpoints on the N6; carry your passport and vehicle documents at all times.
- No ATMs confirmed: bring enough cash from Adrar or Algiers.
Reggane is generally safe, but the desert climate is extreme. The main risks are heatstroke, dehydration and getting lost off-road. Police checkpoints are routine. The former nuclear test sites are restricted; do not enter without permission.
