Regent
Give Regent one night, not a base: drive the 32-mile Enchanted Highway from I-94 exit 72, sleep in town, leave next morning.
Regent is a farm town of about 160 people in western North Dakota, and the southern end of the Enchanted Highway — a 32-mile rural road lined with large scrap-metal sculptures. There is no fuel stop, no chain hotel and no reason to stay two nights. Come for the sculpture drive, one night in a local B&B, and fishing or hunting if that is your trip.

You need a car. The Enchanted Highway runs north from Regent to I-94 exit 72 at Gladstone; Highway 21 links Regent with Mott and New England. Distances are long and cell coverage is patchy, so fill the tank in Dickinson, Mott or Gladstone before you turn off the interstate.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No fuel station in Regent: fill up before you arrive.
- There is a roughly 12-mile gap with no sculptures after the first two on the drive north.
- Winter roads ice over and services shut; check conditions before driving.
- Cell signal is weak between sculptures — download the audio guide before you leave.
Very low crime; the real risks are distance, weather and wildlife on the road. Tell someone your route, carry water, and do not drive the gravel backroads after dark.
