Redfield
Redfield, Arkansas
Skip as a base: Redfield is a 30-minute stop off I-530 between Little Rock and Pine Bluff — see the park and the Big Orange, then move on.
Redfield is a town of about 400 people on the Union Pacific line midway between Little Rock and Pine Bluff, with six National Register properties, a 55-acre city park and a 1966 orange-dome burger stand. There is no hotel strip and no reason to sleep here unless you are camping at Tar Camp on the Arkansas River. Treat it as a half-day detour on a Timberlands drive, not a destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No hotel strip in town: book in Little Rock or Pine Bluff, or camp at Tar Camp.
- Summer heat and humidity; carry water if you walk the park.
- Rural roads are dark and deer are common at dusk — drive slowly after sunset.
- Some small businesses keep short or seasonal hours: call ahead before a long detour.
Small-town Arkansas: violent crime is low, but there is no tourist police presence and no late-night transport. The real risks are summer heat, deer on rural roads at dusk and driving after a few drinks — 911 works everywhere.
