Red Deer
Give Red Deer one night as a Calgary–Edmonton break, or skip it: the river trails and Waskasoo parks are the reason to stop, not the downtown.
Red Deer is Alberta's third-largest city, halfway between Calgary and Edmonton on Highway 2, roughly 1 h 30 min from either. It is a prairie service city with an unusually good river valley: the Waskasoo Park system threads 5 km of protected bird sanctuary, a heritage ranch and a rebuilt 1885 fort through town. Most travellers pass on the highway; the case for stopping is a half-day on the trails plus a bed that costs less than either big city.

Get around
Red Deer Transit buses cover the city but run on a grid with long waits; a car is the practical choice. Taxis (Alberta Gold, Associated Cab) are quick except at rush hour and Friday nights. The river trails are walkable and bikeable from downtown; the CPR bridge over the Red Deer River is now a footbridge.
