Rawene
Stay one night in Rawene, not two: Clendon House, the mangrove boardwalk and the ferry crossing fill a half-day, and the harbour is the point.
Rawene is a small Hokianga Harbour settlement on a peninsula, the third-oldest European settlement in New Zealand, with a population of about 500. There is one historic house, one boardwalk, one ferry and a handful of places to eat. It works as a quiet one-night stop on the Hokianga loop between Opononi and Kohukohu, not as a base for a week.

Get around
Rawene is small enough to walk: the centre, Clendon House, the boardwalk and the ferry landing are all within about 10 minutes on foot. You need a car or the ferry for anything beyond the village. The vehicle ferry to Kohukohu runs roughly hourly in each direction, with extra early-morning sailings and a shuttle at peak times; check the operator's timetable before you plan around it.

Scams and watch-outs
- The Hokianga ferry is a vehicle ferry with a limited timetable: check sailings before you commit to a crossing.
- Clendon House opens only on limited days (roughly Nov–Apr weekends, May–Oct Sundays, plus summer and Easter): check before you drive in.
- Fuel, groceries and pharmacy are in the village but limited: fill up and stock up before heading further up the harbour.
- Cell coverage and card payment can be patchy outside the village: carry some cash.
- The beach beyond the Boatshed is tidal: check the tide before swimming or launching a boat.
Rawene is a quiet, low-crime village and feels safe on foot in daylight. The real risks are the narrow harbour roads, one-lane bridges, weather changes and tidal water: drive to the conditions and check the tide before swimming.
