Raton
Give Raton one night as an I-25 or Amtrak break: downtown, the Santa Fe Trail museum and Sugarite Canyon are the draws; skip it as a base.
Raton sits at the foot of Raton Pass on I-25, the last New Mexico town before Colorado, and is a stop on Amtrak's daily Southwest Chief. It is a small high-plains town of about 6,900 people with a compact historic downtown, a Santa Fe Trail story and a state park in a volcanic canyon. Most travellers use it for one night between Albuquerque or Santa Fe and Colorado, or as a gateway to Philmont Scout Ranch and Cimarron.

A car is the practical way to see anything outside downtown; I-25 and US 64/US 87 meet here. Downtown is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. There is no useful local bus for visitors, and taxis or rideshare are limited: arrange a lift or drive.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Raton Pass on I-25 can close for short spells in winter storms: check road conditions before committing to the drive.
- Amtrak's Southwest Chief runs once daily each way and can be hours late; the station ticket office is staffed only in summer, so buy online.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the back roads toward Sugarite and Cimarron.
- High altitude and dry air: drink more water than usual and use sun protection.
Raton is a quiet small town and the usual risks are weather and distance, not crime: winter storms close Raton Pass, back roads have patchy phone signal, and the altitude is about 2,000 m. Lock the car, keep valuables out of sight and tell someone your route if you head into the hills.
