Go for 2 nights only if you have a reason — aurora, an event, or a Kivalliq work stop. No road in, no road out: you fly.
Rankin Inlet is Nunavut's second-largest community and the air hub for the Kivalliq region, about 2.5 hours by air from Winnipeg. There is no road to anywhere. Two nights covers the town, the inukshuk and a walk onto the tundra; a third night buys you a park trip or a bad-weather buffer. Winter is dark and windy, summer is bright and buggy, and the aurora runs roughly October to March.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Taxis (Rankin Taxi, Darren's Taxi, Silus Taxi) cover the rest, including the airport run. There is no public bus and no rental-car market worth counting on: check with your hotel before you plan a self-drive day.

Scams and watch-outs
- No road connects Rankin Inlet to the rest of Canada: you arrive by air, and weather delays are normal.
- Winter wind chill is the real hazard; −30 °C plus wind is common from about November to March.
- Alcohol rules differ from community to community in Nunavut. Rankin Inlet allows alcohol, but bags are checked on entry to the territory and dry communities confiscate it.
- Mobile coverage is limited: only Bell phones work well here. Download offline maps and tickets before you fly.
- Marble Island is an area of exclusive possession — non-Inuit visitors need a tourism licence from the Kivalliq Inuit Association.
Rankin Inlet is a small, quiet community and violent crime against visitors is rare. The real risks are cold, wind, distance from medical care and alcohol-related trouble late at night: walk in daylight, keep a charged phone, and know where the health centre is.
