Raniya
ڕانیە
Raniya is a half-day stop for Lake Dukan and the 1991 uprising history, not a base. One night if you want the mountain springs and bazaar.
Raniya (Ranya) is a Kurdish town of 258,000 in Sulemania Governorate, 100 km east of Erbil. It sits on Lake Dukan and was the starting point of the 1991 Kurdish uprising. The town has a few springs, a bazaar and a mosque, but most visitors pass through on the way to the lake or the mountains.

Raniya is in the Kurdistan Region, which is generally safer than other parts of Iraq. Still, check your government travel advice, avoid protests, and do not travel after dark outside the town. Petty crime is low but keep valuables out of sight.
