Give the park one full day: drive to Palūšė for the wooden church and the Ladakalnis tower view of six lakes, then canoe or walk the Ginučiai–Šuminai stretch; skip it on a wet weekend in July when Palūšė fills up.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Baltic states ↗Treat the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian borders with Russia and Belarus as closed to your plans: crossings are restricted, change within hours, and sit under advisories on the far side.
  • Baltic states ↗Book open-jaw flights (into Tallinn or Vilnius, out of the other) so the line runs one way; Riga is the biggest airport if you need a single hub.
  • Baltic states ↗Midsummer (23–24 June) is the biggest holiday in all three countries: cities empty, many businesses close and island and coast transport sells out.
  • Lithuania ↗Lithuania is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Lithuanian sources for your passport.
  • Lithuania ↗Borders with Belarus and the Russian Kaliningrad region are not routes for casual travel; check your government's advice first.
  • Lithuania ↗The Curonian Spit is a protected national park: cars pay an entry fee, and the Russian half of the spit is a separate border.

Aukštaitija is Lithuania's oldest national park, set up in 1974 around two existing reserves and renamed for its region after independence in 1991. It is a lowland mix of pine forest, about 120 shallow lakes, castle mounds and villages that still farm and cut wood inside the boundary — only about 2% of the 405.7 km² is strictly protected with no visitor access. Palūšė, on Route 114, holds the park headquarters and the 1757 wooden Church of St Joseph; Ignalina, on the park's east edge, is the rail and bus gateway from Vilnius. There is no single headline sight: the day is a loop of lakes, mounds, a working water mill and a bee-keeping museum.

Why go

  • Lithuania's first national park, and the one with the most lakes per square kilometre.
  • Ladakalnis observation tower shows six lakes from one platform — the fastest way to read the landscape.
  • Villages, a working 19th-century water mill and a bee-keeping museum sit inside the protected area, not beside it.
  • Canoeing between lakes and villages is the reason most Lithuanians come here.

Safety

Cold lake water medium

Remember the water reflects air temperatures from about a month earlier; watch children on the water.

Forest fires medium

In dry conditions follow warnings and be ready to break camp and leave quickly.

Theft from cars and tents low

Do not leave valuables visible in a parked car at trailheads or campsites.

Traffic on Route 114 medium

Roads through the park are narrow and used by locals; walk and cycle facing traffic.

Accessibility

  • Palūšė church, headquarters and the Ladakalnis car park involve only short, mostly level walks.
  • Canoe launches and the water mill have uneven ground; ask locally about step-free access (check).
  • Ignalina has the nearest rail and bus access, but a car is needed to reach most sites in the park.

Visiting lightly

  • Only about 2% of the park is strict reserve; the rest depends on farming and forestry continuing as it has.
  • Buy from village shops and campsites so the communities inside the park keep a stake in it.
  • Keep to marked routes in nesting season and carry out rubbish; fires are banned at unofficial sites.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Aukštaitija National Park?

There is no general gate fee for the park itself, so entry is free. You pay at individual sites: the Bee-keeping Museum in Stripeikiai is about €6 for adults and €3 for children or concessions, open May–October. Canoe rental and campsite pitches are separate, roughly €20–40 a day for a boat and €5–15 a night for a pitch (2026 estimate; check current prices).

What are the best hikes in Aukštaitija National Park?

The park is better for short walks and paddling than for long treks. The Ladakalnis observation tower gives a view of six lakes in about an hour. The castle mounds (piliakalniai) are 30–60 minute climbs each. Around Palūšė and Ginučiai you can link lakeshore paths, the water mill and village lanes into a half day on foot, or cover the same ground by canoe.

When is the best time to visit Aukštaitija National Park?

May, June and September are the best balance of mild weather, open facilities and manageable crowds. July and August average about 23°C but are also the wettest months and the busiest at Palūšė. December to February averages about -2°C and can fall below -20°C, with most services closed.

Do I need a car to visit Aukštaitija National Park?

Practically, yes. Buses from Vilnius run roughly hourly to Ignalina in about two hours, and trains run every three hours or so, but once there you need wheels to reach Palūšė, Ginučiai, Ladakalnis and Stripeikiai. Hire a car in Vilnius or Kaunas; distances inside the park are cyclable but a car is handier for carrying a kayak or sheltering from rain.

Can I camp inside the park?

Yes. There are official campsites at Palūšė (the only one with motorhome hook-ups), Ginučiai, Gaveikėnai, Meironys, Pakretuonė, Salos and Vaišniūnai. Unofficial camping is allowed in most places except residential and crop-growing land, but you may not light fires at those spots. Parking within 20 m of any lake shore or riverbank is banned.

Is Aukštaitija National Park good for families?

Yes, with care on the water. The lakes are shallow and warm by late summer, the walks to the towers and mounds are short, and Ignalina has a sports centre with a pool. Lake water lags air temperature by about a month, so it is colder than it looks in early summer; watch children closely.
