The Salt Pans of Trapani and Paceco are a working coastal wetland between Trapani and Marsala, run as a reserve by WWF Italy since 1996. Salt has been harvested here since Phoenician times, and the shallow basins, restored windmills and low stone walls still divide the water into evaporation pans that shift from silver to pink as salinity and light change. It is not a walking park in the mountain sense: the flat paths suit bikes and slow birdwatching, and the reason to come is the light, the flamingos in migration and the small salt museum at Nubia. The reserve sits inside the proposed Egadi Islands and Trapanese Coast national park, so boundaries and visitor arrangements may change.

What are the best hikes in the Salt Pans of Trapani and Paceco?
There are no mountain trails here. The best routes are flat: the Salt Way cycle from Nubia along the basins, about 20 km, and short walks from the museum to the windmills and the panoramic viewpoint. Birdwatchers head for the southern ponds around Salina Sellinella.
When is the best time to visit the Salt Pans of Trapani and Paceco?
March to May and September to October, for migration and mild temperatures. In summer come at sunrise or after 17:00 to avoid heat and glare. Guided visits usually run Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, so book ahead.
Can I visit without a guide?
Yes, for the public roads and paths and the museum area. Some wetland zones are closed, and guided visits are the only way into those; the WWF office takes bookings by email or phone.

Drive or cycle south on the SP21 coast road to Nubia, about 15–20 minutes. There is no direct train; buses are limited, so a car, bike or taxi is the practical choice.
