Cuyahoga Valley is the only national park in Ohio and one of the few with no entrance fee: a 51 sq mi (134 km²) strip of river, canal and forest between Cleveland and Akron, with 186 mi of trails, a working scenic railroad and a historic canal village at Peninsula. Brandywine Falls and the Ledges are the two set-piece stops; the flat Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath is the spine that links them. It is a day trip from the city, not a wilderness — freeway exits, chain hotels and suburban roads sit minutes from the trailheads, and the lots at Brandywine and the Ledges fill by mid-morning on October weekends.

The Ledges Trail (about 2 mi, moderate, sandstone ledges and an overlook) and the flat Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath for any distance. Add Brandywine Falls for a 30-minute boardwalk walk and Blue Hen Falls for a short steep out-and-back.
When is the best time to visit Cuyahoga Valley National Park?
May and September: mild, green and quieter. October has the best colour but the busiest lots — arrive before 9:00 on weekends. January and February are cold with icy trails and few services.

No permit for entry or trails. Reserve a scenic railroad seat and the Stanford House campsites in advance; everything else is first-come.
How do I get there without a car?
It is hard. The park has no internal shuttle; most visitors drive from Cleveland or Akron. The scenic railroad connects stations inside the valley, and some riders arrive by train and walk the towpath.
Can I camp in the park?
Only at the Stanford House primitive sites, for distance hikers and bikers on the towpath — no drive-up camping. Several Ohio state parks with campgrounds are within an hour.
Is one day enough?
Yes for a first visit: Brandywine Falls and the Ledges in the morning, towpath or railroad in the afternoon. Two days lets you add the southern valley and Beaver Marsh.
