Rules in force · 7
  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
  • New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
  • New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.

Tongariro is New Zealand's first national park (1887) and a mixed World Heritage site, protecting three active volcanoes: Ruapehu (2,797 m, the North Island's highest), Ngauruhoe (2,291 m) and Tongariro (1,967 m). There is no entrance gate and no entry fee; the costs are shuttle seats, hut beds and ski-field passes. The Alpine Crossing is the headline walk and the crowd problem: up to 2,000 people a day in summer. Everything else — Taranaki Falls, Tama Lakes, the Northern Circuit, the crater climb — is quieter and, on a bad-weather day, the better call.

Why go

  • Three live volcanoes you can walk on, not just look at, with no entry gate and no ticket.
  • The Alpine Crossing: 19.4 km (12 mi) past craters, steam vents and the Emerald Lakes in one day.
  • A short walk from Whakapapa village — Taranaki Falls in about 3 hours — when the high mountain is closed in.
  • The Tongariro Northern Circuit, 43.1 km (27 mi) over 3–4 days, with DOC huts and far fewer people than the day walk.
  • Winter skiing on Ruapehu at Whakapapa and Turoa, the North Island's two main ski fields.

Park rules

Drones, guides, camping and more
Alpine Crossing booking
Book online before walking; it is free and there is no cap yet, but daily limits may be introduced (check).
No parking at Mangatepopo
DOC discourages leaving cars at the Mangatepopo end because of thefts; shuttles drop on the main road, about 7 km (4.3 mi) from the car park, or return you to Whakapapa village.
Blue Lake
Tapu (sacred) to Māori; do not touch the water, swim or wash in it.
Crater Lake area
Stay outside the crater basin and 400 m from the lake unless the volcanic alert level allows it; the summit can erupt without warning.
Water
Treat hut tank water — giardia has been found — and avoid stream water, which can carry volcanic heavy metals.
Fires and drones
No fires; drone use needs DOC permission and is restricted over the World Heritage area (check).

Where to stay

In the park

Whakapapa village

Lodges, a hotel and the visitor centre at the foot of the ski road; best for short walks and winter.

Near the park

National Park village

Budget lodges, hostels and the train station, 20–30 min from Whakapapa and the crossing shuttles.

Near the park

Ohakune

The biggest base, with restaurants and the Turoa road; 40–50 min from Whakapapa.

Near the park

Turangi

Closest town to the Ketetahi end, useful if you walk the crossing north to south.

In the park

DOC huts (Mangatepopo, Oturere, Waihohonu)

Bunk rooms with water tanks and toilets on the Northern Circuit; book in season.

Safety

Sudden weather change on the crossing high

Check the mountain forecast the morning you go, carry warm and waterproof layers even in summer, and turn back if cloud closes in.

Hypothermia and exposure high

There is no shelter on most of the route; take more clothing than you think you need and food you can eat cold.

Volcanic eruption medium

Check the volcanic alert level and track status before setting out; the crossing has been closed by eruptions before.

Lahars and flooding medium

Do not camp in valleys below the crater lake; heed heavy-rain warnings — a school group died in a flash flood here in 2008.

Winter ice and navigation high

From April to November use ice axe and crampons and go guided unless you are an experienced alpine trekker; markers can be buried.

Car break-ins at trailheads medium

Do not leave valuables in a parked car; use a shuttle instead of parking at the Mangatepopo end.

How much daylight do you have?

computed for this spot

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The visitor centre, Whakapapa village paths and the lower Taranaki Falls section are graded and partly wheelchair-accessible; ask at the centre for the current route.
  • The Alpine Crossing, Tama Lakes, the crater climb and the Northern Circuit are rough, steep and unsuitable for limited mobility.

Visiting lightly

  • Take a shuttle rather than adding a car to the Mangatepopo and Ketetahi car parks.
  • Carry out all rubbish; there are no bins on the tracks.
  • Stay on the marked route to protect alpine plants, and keep off the tapu ground around Blue Lake.
  • Book huts rather than camping in fragile alpine areas.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Tongariro National Park?

Nothing. There is no gate and no entry fee. Your costs are a shuttle seat (about NZ$30–50 return), DOC hut beds (about NZ$45–75 a night in season) and ski-field passes in winter.

What are the best hikes in Tongariro National Park?

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing (19.4 km, 6–8 h) is the headline walk. Taranaki Falls (about 3 h from Whakapapa) is the best short option, Tama Lakes (4–5 h) is quieter, and the Tongariro Northern Circuit (43.1 km, 3–4 days) is the multi-day route.

When is the best time to visit Tongariro National Park?

December to March for the Alpine Crossing, with March the pick for fewer people and settled weather. April to November is winter conditions on the high tracks — snow, ice and short days — but fine for skiing and low-level walks.

Do I need to book the Tongariro Alpine Crossing?

Yes. Booking on the DOC site has been required since 2023. It is free and there is no cap at present, but daily limits may be introduced later. You also need a shuttle seat, which you pay for.

Can I drive to the start of the Alpine Crossing and leave my car?

DOC discourages it because of thefts at the Mangatepopo end. Shuttles drop walkers on the main road about 7 km from the car park, or return you to Whakapapa village. Use a shuttle and leave the car at your accommodation.

Is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing safe for beginners?

It is a long, exposed alpine walk, not a city trail. Fit walkers with proper boots and layers manage it in summer. In winter it needs ice axe, crampons and navigation skills, and guided trips are the sensible choice.

Can I see Mount Ngauruhoe, the Lord of the Rings mountain?

Yes — it is the cone above the crossing, used as a backdrop for Mordor. Climbing it adds about two hours of steep scree and is not a marked track. The mountain is tapu to many Māori, so treat it with respect.
