Jewel Cave is the third-longest known cave on Earth — more than 200 miles of surveyed passages, with only a small fraction explored — and every foot of it is entered on a ranger-guided tour. The monument above ground is small: about one square mile of pine forest, two short trails, a visitor centre with elevators down to the cave, and a historic area a mile west where the 1900 entrance and lantern tours are. There is no lodging and no food service, so most visitors base in Custer, 13 miles east on US 16, and pair the cave with Wind Cave, Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore.

Accessibility
- The visitor centre is below the parking lot, reached by ramp or stairs; the cave tours use an elevator.
- The Scenic Tour involves many stairs and uneven footing, so it is not wheelchair accessible; ask at the desk about the least strenuous option.
- The Discovery Talk is the shortest and least demanding cave option but still has stairs.
- Service animals are allowed on surface trails; check NPS rules before bringing them into the cave.

There is no entrance fee for the monument or its surface trails. What are the best hikes in Jewel Cave National Monument?
There are only two surface trails. The Roof Trail is a 0.25 mi loop from the visitor centre, good for 15–20 minutes. The Canyons Trail is a 3.5 mi loop between the visitor centre and the Historic Area through Jasper Fire regrowth, taking 1.5–2 hours with little shade. The cave itself is not a hike — it is a guided tour.
When is the best time to visit Jewel Cave National Monument?
May, June, September and October. The Wild Caving Tour runs May–September and the Historic Lantern Tour June–September, while July and August are the busiest and tours sell out. Winter has a reduced tour schedule and icy driving on US 16.
Do I need a reservation for a cave tour?
Yes in practice. Tours are limited in size and can be reserved on Recreation.gov up to about 2–3 months ahead. Same-day tickets are not guaranteed, and summer tours commonly sell out, so book before you drive out from Custer or Rapid City.
How long does the Scenic Tour take and how hard is it?
About 1 hour 20 minutes, moderately strenuous: a paved route with 723 stairs, an elevator down and up, and some low ceilings. The cave stays near 49 °F (9.4 °C), so bring a jacket and closed shoes.
Can I go into the cave without a guide?
No. All cave access is by guided tour only. The passages away from the tour routes are unlit and easy to get lost in, and there is just one natural entrance plus the elevator.
Is Jewel Cave the same as Wind Cave?
No. They are separate parks about an hour apart in the Black Hills, both with guided cave tours. Some people speculate the two systems connect, but that is unproven. Wind Cave is known for boxwork; Jewel Cave for calcite spar and its length.
Where should I stay near Jewel Cave?
