Kukës is the last Albanian town before Kosovo, sitting where the White and Black Drin meet and the Fierza reservoir begins. The old town is under the lake; what remains is a small grid of cafés, a museum, two bridges and a lot of mountain. It earned a Nobel Peace Prize nomination in 2000 for sheltering Kosovo refugees, and the memorial to that is the town's most meaningful sight. Most travellers pass through on the Tirana–Pristina highway; the ones who stop come for rock climbing, hiking and fishing.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk, but pavements are uneven and potholed and parked cars block them. Taxis take lekë and euro — agree the fare before you get in. A car helps for the gorges, Gjallica and the lake; driving here is disorganised, so only rent if you are comfortable with it.

Watch out

Safety

Kukës is small and calm; the real risks are mountain roads, unmarked gorge descents and winter closures. Solo hiking off-trail is the thing to avoid.
  • There is no bus station: buses and furgons leave from the former Hotel Parku. Confirm the departure point and time the day before.
  • Mountain roads (SH23, SH26, SH31) can close with snow from late autumn to spring.
  • The airport is reported inoperative — do not book a flight into KFZ without checking.
  • The underground tunnels are only visitable on an arranged tour; do not try to enter alone.
  • Cash is king outside the centre; ATMs are few.
