Know before you go

This is the best-known Hindu temple in Dhaka and is treated as the national temple of Bangladesh. Local tradition places its origin in the 12th century; the present buildings are much later and were rebuilt after damage in 1971.
It is a working temple: visitors are welcome, but worship comes first. Watch what others do with shoes and offerings.
During Durga Puja (usually October) and Janmashtami (August or September) the temple is crowded and the road is closed to vehicles for hours (check dates).
Some shrines have restricted photography: ask before you raise a camera.
