Mount St. Helens is the volcano that took the top off a mountain on 18 May 1980: a landslide, a lateral blast and 57 deaths, now a 445 km² national monument inside Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The monument is not a single gate — it is three road systems (west WA-504, south FR-90, east FR-25) that do not connect quickly, so most visitors pick one side per day. Since a May 2023 landslide, WA-504 is closed past the Science and Learning Center at Coldwater (milepost 45.2) and Johnston Ridge Observatory is shut while repairs run, expected to finish in late 2026 or 2027. The west side still delivers the blast-zone landscape and the crater view; the south side holds Ape Cave, one of North America's longest lava tubes.

Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The Coldwater Lake area and the Silver Lake centre have paved, step-free paths and accessible parking.
- The lower Ape Cave route is a paved 3/4 mi walk but the cave floor is uneven and cold; the upper route is not accessible.
- The summit climb, Loowit Trail and Loowit Falls are rough, steep and not suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on the trail in the blast zone; the recovering soil and plants are easily damaged.
- Do not pocket pumice, rocks or artefacts; everything in the monument is protected.
- Pack out all rubbish, including cave waste, and use the toilets at visitor centres before heading up the highway.
- Keep drone use off unless you hold the required permits (check).
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Mount St. Helens?
There is no single monument-wide entrance fee. The Science and Learning Center at Coldwater charges about $5 per vehicle, Johnston Ridge Observatory charged about $8 per person when open (it is closed for road repairs), and the Forest Learning Center is free. Interagency recreation passes are accepted where fees apply. Ape Cave is free but needs a timed reservation in season, and summit climbing permits cost $20 per person from April to October and are free in winter.
What are the best hikes in Mount St. Helens?
For most visitors: the short trails at Coldwater Lake on the west side, and Ape Cave on the south side, where the lower route is a paved 3/4 mi walk into the lava tube. Stronger walkers go to Loowit Falls from Windy Ridge (9.2 mi, about 1,200 ft of gain) or climb the summit via Monitor Ridge (10 mi, about 4,500 ft of gain, permit required). The 30 mi Loowit Trail is a multi-day backpacking route with little water.
When is the best time to visit Mount St. Helens?
June to September for the west side and the summit, with July to September the most reliable for clear crater views. The upper west-side road usually opens around Memorial Day and closes when snow arrives, often in late October. Forest roads on the south and east sides are unplowed and typically closed November to April. Winter visits are limited to lower trails and the Silver Lake centre.
Is Johnston Ridge Observatory open?
No. WA-504 has been closed past the Science and Learning Center at Coldwater (milepost 45.2) since a landslide in May 2023, and Johnston Ridge Observatory is shut while road and bridge repairs run, expected to finish in late 2026 or 2027. Check the Forest Service alerts before driving; Coldwater is the end of the drivable west side for now.
Do I need a permit to climb to the summit?
Yes. Everyone above 4,800 ft needs a climbing permit. From April 1 to October 31 permits are advance-reservation only through Recreation.gov, released on the 1st of each month for the following month, and weekend dates sell out within seconds. From November 1 to March 31 permits are free and self-issued at the trailhead.
Can I visit Mount St. Helens as a day trip from Seattle or Portland?
Yes, but it is a long day. Both cities are about 2 to 2.5 hours from the Castle Rock exit on I-5, then another hour or more up WA-504 to Coldwater. Plan on 8 to 10 hours round trip with stops, and fill the tank before leaving I-5.
