Voss is a small inland town on the Bergen line, between the Sognefjord and the Hardangerfjord, and Norway's self-styled adventure capital. Two nights covers rafting or the gondola plus one fjord or ski day; skiers and hikers add a third. It is a transport hub, so it works as a stop between Bergen and Oslo rather than a destination on its own.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: station, Vangsgata, the lake and the gondola base are all within about 15 minutes on foot. Local buses (Skyss) reach Bavallen and the outer valleys, and a ski bus runs to the resorts in season; check times, they are thin outside winter. The train is the way in and out — Voss is a stop on the Oslo–Bergen line. A car helps for Stalheim, Tvindefossen and Myrkdalen, but you do not need one for a two-night stop.

Watch out

Safety

Voss is a small, safe town; the real risks are cold water on rafting trips, ice on gorge paths, and mountain weather that turns fast — tell someone your route and carry a layer.
  • The old Hanguren chairlift is gone; the Voss Gondol now runs from the station, and the round trip is priced like a sightseeing ticket, not a ski lift — check the current fare.
  • Stalheimskleiva, the hairpin road with the waterfalls, is closed to motor vehicles; you can still walk it, but not drive it.
  • Bordalsgjelet gorge paths are unsafe with snow or ice — keep to marked ground.
  • Rafting and canyoning run on cold glacial water even in summer; wetsuits are provided, but book with a licensed operator.
  • Many kitchens close by 21:00 and the brewery has short opening hours; eat before you drink.
