Gulf Islands National Seashore is not one place. It is twelve units of barrier island and mainland spread across two states about two hours apart by car: the Florida district around Pensacola (Fort Pickens, Santa Rosa, Perdido Key, Naval Live Oaks, Okaloosa) and the Mississippi district around Ocean Springs (Davis Bayou plus the offshore islands). The white sand is quartz washed down from the Appalachians. Most visitors see one district, not both. Storm damage closes sections often, so check the park's current conditions page the day before you drive.

- Fort Pickens and Fort Barrancas are intact brick forts with Civil War and World War II history, reached on foot, by bike or by boat.
- Bright quartz sand and dune habitat that survives because sea oats were replanted after the 1995 hurricanes.

Accessibility
- Fort Pickens, the Opal Beach area and the Naval Live Oaks centre are reached by car with short, mostly level walks.
- The forts have steps, uneven brick and dark passages; the Advanced Redoubt is reached by a half-mile Trench Trail.
- West Ship Island requires a third-of-a-mile walk over sand to reach the Gulf beach.
Visiting lightly
- Stay off roped turtle nests and planted dune grass; both are the reason the beach is still here.
- Take all rubbish off the islands — there is no collection offshore.
- Use the marked bike paths instead of the road shoulder where they exist.
- Do not feed or handle wildlife, including the beach mouse.

What are the best hikes in Gulf Islands National Seashore?
There is no mountain hiking here. The best walks are the Fort Pickens self-guided route, the nine short trails at Naval Live Oaks, the half-mile Trench Trail to the Advanced Redoubt, and the Davis Bayou trails in Mississippi. The long rides are on bikes: 14 miles round trip on Fort Pickens Road and 15.5 miles on the Live Oaks route into Ocean Springs.
When is the best time to visit Gulf Islands National Seashore?
March, April and October. Days are warm, the sea is swimmable by April, and the West Ship Island ferry runs March–October. June to September is humid with afternoon storms and hurricane risk, and it is the busiest stretch.
Can I visit both the Florida and Mississippi districts in one trip?
Yes, but they are about a two-hour drive apart and each deserves its own day. Most people pick one: Pensacola for the forts and Santa Rosa beaches, or Ocean Springs for Davis Bayou and the islands.
Do I need a boat to see the park?
No. Fort Pickens, Santa Rosa, Perdido Key, Naval Live Oaks and Davis Bayou are all reached by car. A boat or the Gulfport ferry is only needed for the Mississippi barrier islands.
Is there food or water in the park?
No food or drinks are sold inside park boundaries, and there is no water on the islands. Bring your own, and note that alcohol and glass containers are prohibited everywhere in the park.
