Kanangra-Boyd is the wild southern half of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area: a high plateau that drops in one step to the Kanangra and Kowmung gorges, with the Boyd Plateau and its rivers to the south-west. There is one road in, no public transport, no cafe and no fuel. Most visitors drive to Kanangra Walls, walk ten minutes to the lookout, and leave. The rest of the park is remote walking country where a wrong turn costs a night out.

How much does it cost to enter Kanangra-Boyd National Park?

Nothing. There is no entry fee and no gate on Kanangra Walls Road. You pay only if you camp: Boyd River campground is about A$6 per adult per night (2026 estimate), booked through NSW National Parks.

What are the best hikes in Kanangra-Boyd National Park?

For most visitors it is the flat 10-minute walk from the car park to the Kanangra Walls lookout, with an optional rougher 1–1.5 h return to the falls and Thurat Spires viewpoint. Beyond that, the Kanangra and Kowmung gorge routes are multi-day, unmarked and for experienced walkers only.

When is the best time to visit Kanangra-Boyd National Park?

March to April and September to November give mild days, clear views and manageable nights. June to August is cold, with frost, ice and possible snow on the plateau. Summer is warm but brings storm and bushfire risk.

Can I get there without a car?

No. There is no public transport. The only road in is unsealed Kanangra Walls Road, which is rough but passable by 2WD in dry weather. From Oberon allow about an hour; from Sydney it is a long day trip.

Is Kanangra-Boyd the same as the Blue Mountains?

It is part of the same Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area but a separate national park, south-west of the well-known towns. It is quieter, higher and much less developed than the Katoomba end.

Can I camp in the park?

Yes, at the Boyd River campground on Kanangra Walls Road, with about 30 car-based sites and pit toilets. Book and pay online first. Backpack camping is possible on registered overnight walks; there is no camping at the Walls car park.
