Indiana Dunes is a thin, broken strip of Lake Michigan shoreline about an hour from downtown Chicago: sand dunes, beach, bog, oak savanna and marsh packed into roughly 15,000 acres, with steel mills and a power plant visible from parts of the shore. It became a national lakeshore in 1966 and was renamed a national park in 2019 — the first in Indiana. The separate Indiana Dunes State Park sits inside the federal boundary and charges its own gate fee, so the two are easy to confuse.

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

How much does it cost to enter Indiana Dunes National Park?
Since 2023 the national park charges an entrance fee: about $25 per private vehicle for a 7-day period, or about $15 per person arriving on foot or by bike (2026 estimate, check current NPS fee). An America the Beautiful annual pass covers it. Indiana Dunes State Park, which sits inside the federal boundary, charges its own separate per-vehicle gate fee of roughly $7–12 and does not accept the federal pass.
What are the best hikes in Indiana Dunes National Park?
For dunes and beach in one short walk, West Beach's loops are the easiest. Cowles Bog Trail is the best longer walk, through wetland and woodland to the shore. Mount Baldy is the most strenuous climb and the most fragile — marked trail only. The Inland Marsh boardwalk is flat, step-free and good in migration. The 3 Dunes Challenge is in the state park, not the national park.
When is the best time to visit Indiana Dunes National Park?
May and September–October: comfortable temperatures, the strongest bird migration and thinner beach crowds than midsummer. July and August are warmest for swimming but the lots nearest Chicago fill by mid-morning at weekends. Winter is quiet and cold, with ice along the shore.
Do I need a reservation or permit?
No reservation for day use, but you must pay the entrance fee or show a valid federal pass at most lots. Dunewood Campground is first-come, first-served with no reservations, so arrive early on summer weekends. Fishing needs an Indiana licence.
Can I get there without a car?
Yes. The South Shore Line runs from downtown Chicago to Dune Park, about a 20-minute walk from the state park entrance, and to Portage/Ogden Dunes for the west end. Bikes are allowed on some trains only, so check before you travel.
Which beach is least crowded?
Crowds thin as you go east from Chicago. Kemil, Dunbar, Lake View and Central beaches are usually quieter than West Beach, and Mount Baldy is the most remote. The state park beach is another option, but you pay its gate fee.
