Izmir is Turkey's third-largest city and its main Aegean port, with a long waterfront promenade and a working city feel. The Kemeraltı bazaar, the Agora ruins and the archaeological museum are the sights; the food and the ferries are the pleasure. Ephesus, Selçuk, Çeşme and Alaçatı are all day-trip range. It suits travellers who want an easy airport and a real city before moving down the coast.

Getting around

The metro, İZBAN suburban rail, trams and city ferries cover most needs; an İzmirim card (a few TRY per ride, 2026 estimate, check) works on all. Ferries across the bay are cheap and a good way to see the waterfront. Ephesus is reached by İZBAN to Selçuk (about 1 hour 20 minutes) then a taxi or dolmuş, or by tour.

  • Summer is very hot; plan sightseeing for the morning.
  • The bazaar is crowded on weekends; watch bags and phones.
  • Check opening days for museums and archaeological sites; Ephesus is busiest 10:00–14:00 with cruise groups.
  • Some bars in the harbour area add large charges or unlisted service: check prices before ordering.
  • Wildfires can affect the coast in July and August; follow local advice.
