  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Polynesia ↗In much of Polynesia Sunday is kept for church and family: expect shops, tours and some flights to stop, and dress and behave quietly in villages.
  • Cook Islands ↗Entry rules are the Cook Islands' own: visitors get a 31-day visitor permit on arrival with an onward ticket and booked accommodation, but check Cook Islands immigration for your passport. If you connect through Auckland, check New Zealand's NZeTA and transit rules too.
  • Cook Islands ↗Declare food, plant and animal products on arrival; biosecurity inspection is strict.
  • Cook Islands ↗Drive on the left; the speed limit around Rarotonga is low, and helmets are required on scooters. Check the licence rules for visitors on arrival.

Suwarrow National Park covers the entire Suwarrow Atoll in the Northern Cook Islands, a ring of coral islets around a turquoise lagoon. It is one of the most isolated national parks in the world, visited by a few dozen yachts each year. The atoll is famous as the home of Tom Neale, a New Zealander who lived alone here for 16 years across three stays between 1952 and 1977, writing *An Island to Oneself*. Today the park protects immense seabird colonies, pristine coral reefs and the quiet relics of Neale's life. There are no entry fees, no hotels, no shops; visitors arrive on their own yacht and stay as guests of the resident rangers.

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The landing beach and paths are coral sand and sharp rock; not suitable for wheelchairs or limited mobility.
  • No paved surfaces, no ramps, no accessible facilities.

Visiting lightly

  • Do not disturb seabird colonies; keep a distance from nests and do not enter closed islets.
  • Carry out all rubbish and food waste; the atoll has no waste management.
