Dorrigo protects a slab of Gondwana rainforest on the escarpment above the Bellingen valley, 2 km east of Dorrigo town and about an hour from Coffs Harbour on the Waterfall Way. It is the most visited part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage area: a plateau edge of red cedar, bungalow palm and tree ferns, cut by waterfalls that drop off the rim. Entry is free; you pay only for the visitor centre's guided tour and café. The walking is short and well built, which is why it works as a half-day stop on a Waterfall Way drive rather than a destination in itself.

How much does it cost to enter Dorrigo National Park?

Nothing. Dorrigo has no entry fee and no parking charge, unlike some NSW parks that charge per vehicle. You pay only if you join the guided Gondwana rainforest tour (adult around A$20, child around A$10, family around A$50; 2026 estimate) or buy food at Canopy Café.

What are the best hikes in Dorrigo National Park?

The Wonga Walk is the one to do if you have half a day: about 6 km, 2–3 hours, easy grade, taking in Crystal Shower Falls and Tristania Falls. For something harder, the Red Cedar Falls track is an 8 km loop from Never Never picnic area with a steep 1.2 km descent to the park's biggest waterfall, 3–3.5 hours. The Walk with the Birds boardwalk is a 30-minute option at the Rainforest Centre.

When is the best time to visit Dorrigo National Park?

April, May, September and October give the most reliable walking weather: mild, often clear, and the tracks drier than in summer. Winter (June–August) is cold on the plateau but good for lyrebirds. December to March is wet and humid, with leeches and slippery tracks, and the escarpment frequently fogs over.

Do I need a guide or a permit?

No permit is needed and the main tracks are self-guided. A ranger-guided Gondwana World Heritage rainforest tour runs from the Rainforest Centre for a fee and is worth it if you want the ecology explained. The only booking that matters for transport is the Dorrigo Transit shuttle, which must be asked in advance to divert via the park.

Can I camp or stay inside Dorrigo National Park?

No. There is no camping, no lodge and no accommodation inside the park. Sleep in Dorrigo town about 2 km away, at Lookout Mountain Retreat opposite the park, in Bellingen 30 minutes down the range, or in Coffs Harbour about an hour away.

Is Dorrigo National Park accessible?

The Rainforest Centre, café, Skywalk and the Walk with the Birds boardwalk are on sealed, mostly flat paths with accessible parking. The Wonga Walk and Red Cedar Falls track involve long flights of steps and rough, wet surfaces and are not suitable for wheelchairs or limited mobility.
