Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park protects the northern Flinders Ranges about 65 km north of Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, in Adnyamathanha country, and adjoins the Arkaroola Protection Area to the north and the Natanwarrina Indigenous Protected Area to the south. It is quieter than Arkaroola or Ikara-Flinders, and its gorges and chasms are the reason to come. Access is by the unsealed Gammon Ranges Road from the Flinders Hwy (B83); Balcanoona is the headquarters, Grindell's Hut and Weetootla are the walking bases, and Iga Warta, just west of the park, runs the cultural tours. The park is on Australia's tentative World Heritage list with Ikara-Flinders Ranges and Nilpena Ediacara national parks (check).

Accessibility

Weetootla Gorge from Grindell's Hut to Weetootla campground is the moderate classic, with springs and pools. Italowie Gorge is the hard one: about 15.8 km one way, roughly 8 hours. Uncle Gill's Walk at Balcanoona takes 15 minutes. The Blue Range gorges are for experienced off-track navigators only.
When is the best time to visit Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park?
April to September. Days are mild, nights are cold, and the unsealed roads are usually firm. December to February is extreme heat and best avoided; October and November are still workable if you walk early.
Do I need a 4WD to get there?
The approach from the Flinders Hwy (B83) on Gammon Ranges Road is unsealed for roughly the last 60 km. A 2WD can manage it in dry conditions, but a 4WD is needed for Grindell's Hut and the rougher tracks, and after rain the road may be impassable.
Can I see rock art in the park?
The significant painting and engraving sites are on Adnyamathanha country around the park, and Iga Warta, just west of it, is the operator running tours to them, including Red Gorge. Do not visit sites alone or touch the art.
Is there phone signal or fuel?
There is Telstra coverage and a public telephone at Balcanoona, but nothing reliable elsewhere in the park. Fill up at Leigh Creek or Copley before the unsealed road; there is no fuel in the park.
