Go only with your own car or a hired taxi for the day: enter at the Xpujil gate before 8:00, drive the 60 km (37 mi) to the ruins, climb Structure II before the heat, and leave by 15:00 — without a vehicle this is a full-day, hard-to-arrange trip.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
  • Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.

Calakmul is the largest intact tropical forest in Mexico and the Maya city buried inside it, reached by a single 60 km secondary road from the Route 186 gate. The reserve itself has no public trails: the walking is the archaeological site, where Structure II is one of the tallest Maya pyramids and the plazas hold more than a hundred carved stelae. It is a car trip or a hired-taxi day from Xpujil, not a stop on a bus route, and the drive is what keeps the crowds away.

Why go

  • The largest intact tropical forest in Mexico, with the Maya city of Calakmul buried inside it.
  • Structure II is one of the tallest Maya pyramids; from the top the forest reads as a flat green plain to the horizon.
  • Wildlife is not a promise but a likelihood: howler and spider monkeys, toucans, and jaguar tracks on the road.
  • Few visitors compared with Chichén Itzá or Tulum, because the drive keeps the crowds out.

Where to stay

Near the park

Xpujil

The practical base: hotels, cabins and restaurants on Route 186, about 1.5–2 h from the ruins.

Near the park

Chicanná

A smaller cluster of lodgings west of Xpujil, close to the Becán and Chicanná ruins.

Near the park

Local campgrounds outside the reserve

Tent sites run by ejidos and tour operators; no camping inside the reserve.

Safety

Mosquito-borne disease high

Use repellent with DEET, cover arms and legs at dawn and dusk, and treat the region as dengue and malaria country.

Heat and humidity medium

Start at opening, carry 2–3 L of water per person, and climb the pyramids before 11:00.

The park road medium

Potholes and topes are common; drive slowly, avoid the road after dark, and do not attempt it in heavy rain.

No services inside medium

Bring food, water and cash; there is nothing to buy between the gate and the ruins.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The site entrance, plaza and main paths are flat and walkable with assistance; surfaces are uneven dirt and stone.
  • The pyramids, including Structure II, are climbed by steep stairs and are not accessible for limited mobility.
  • The 60 km (37 mi) park road is unpaved in stretches and rough for low vehicles.

Visiting lightly

  • Hire local guides and drivers from Xpujil and the ejidos so the reserve pays its neighbours.
  • Buy honey and chicle products from communities around the reserve rather than imported souvenirs.
  • Keep to the road and the site paths; the forest around Calakmul is the reason the ruins survived.
  • Take all rubbish back to Xpujil — there are no bins inside the reserve.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Reserva de la Biósfera Calakmul?

Two fees: the reserve entry at the main gate on Route 186, roughly MXN 60–100 per person, and the INAH archaeological site ticket at Calakmul, roughly MXN 90–100 per person (2026 estimates — check current rates). If you have no car, add about MXN 1,400–1,600 for a taxi from Xpujil for the day.

What are the best hikes in Reserva de la Biósfera Calakmul?

There are no public hiking trails in the reserve itself — the forest is off-limits on foot. The walking is inside the archaeological site: the plaza and stelae circuit (2–3 h, easy), Structure I and the palace complex (about 1 h, moderate), and the climb up Structure II (1–1.5 h, moderate, steep stairs).

When is the best time to visit Reserva de la Biósfera Calakmul?

November to March: dry roads, clearer light and fewer mosquitoes. April and May are very hot, and July to September is the wettest stretch, when the park road can become difficult and mosquitoes are at their worst.

Can I visit Calakmul without a car?

It is possible but slow. Buses on Route 186 stop at the reserve gate, but the ruins are another 60 km inside with no buses. The practical options are a taxi from Xpujil for the day or a guided day tour; both need booking the day before.

How long do I need at Calakmul?

Plan a full day from Xpujil: 1.5–2 h each way on the park road, plus 3–4 h at the ruins. Leave Xpujil by 7:00 to reach the site near opening and be back before dark.

Is there anywhere to stay or eat inside the reserve?

No. There is no lodging, food or water inside the reserve. Sleep in Xpujil or Chicanná and bring your own food and water for the day.
