Scotts Bluff is the landmark that told Oregon Trail, California Trail and Pony Express travellers they had crossed the plains: a line of bluffs rising about 800 ft (245 m) over the North Platte valley, with Mitchell Pass as the gap the wagons actually rolled through. It is a small monument — roughly 3,000 acres of bluff, pass and prairie — and most people see it in two hours: drive Summit Road to the North and South Overlooks, walk the 0.5 mi Wagon Train Trail out to the ruts, and stop at the Oregon Trail Museum for context. The one real hike is Saddle Rock Trail, 1.6 mi one way from the visitor centre to the summit with about 435 ft of climb through a tunnel, steep and fully exposed. Come in May, June, September or October; July and August are hot and the trail has no shade, so start at opening. Winter is quiet but the summit road and trail can be icy or closed. Sleep in Scottsbluff or Gering — there is no camping inside the monument.
