- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Effigy Mounds protects more than 200 American Indian mounds on the bluffs above the Mississippi in northeast Iowa, about 20 of them shaped as bears, birds and other animals. The monument was established in 1949 and is held sacred by roughly 20 culturally associated tribes, so the visit is a walk past burial and ceremonial earthworks rather than a hike to a summit. There is no entrance fee and no lodging or camping on site; the bluff trail to Hanging Rock and Fire Point is the reason to come, and Marquette, Iowa and Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, across the river, hold the beds.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- Check current NPS accessibility information for the visitor centre, restrooms and the short mound loop near the building before relying on step-free access.
- The bluff trail to Hanging Rock and Fire Point has steps, uneven dirt and grades; not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.
- Accessible parking is next to the visitor centre entrance (check).
Visiting lightly
- Stay on trails: cutting across mounds damages both the archaeology and the prairie.
- Carry out everything you bring; bins are limited on the trails.
- Visit on weekdays in spring and autumn to spread pressure away from peak weekends.
- Support the towns of Marquette and Prairie du Chien rather than driving in and out from a distance.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Effigy Mounds National Monument?
Nothing. There is no entrance fee and parking is free, so a visit costs only your travel. The America the Beautiful annual pass is not needed here, though it is worth having if the same trip includes fee-charging national parks.
What are the best hikes in Effigy Mounds National Monument?
The 4.8 km (3 mi) round trip to Hanging Rock and Fire Point is the main walk: boardwalk and dirt, about 90 m of climbing, two river overlooks. The short paved loop at the visitor centre is the easiest way to see mounds, and the South Unit is the quietest option.
When is the best time to visit Effigy Mounds National Monument?
May, September and October: mild temperatures, dry trails and the clearest views over the Mississippi. July and August are hot and humid, and January and February often bring ice on the bluff steps.
How long do I need at Effigy Mounds?
Two to three hours covers the visitor centre and the Hanging Rock and Fire Point walk. Add an hour if you also do the South Unit or join a ranger programme.
Can I camp or stay overnight in the monument?
No. There is no lodging or camping on site. Sleep in Marquette or McGregor in Iowa, or in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, across the river.
Are dogs allowed on the trails?
Pets are not allowed on the monument trails; they can be kept in the parking area on a leash (check).
Is the monument accessible for wheelchairs?
The visitor centre and the short mound loop near it are accessible. The bluff trail to Hanging Rock and Fire Point has steps and uneven surfaces and is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.
