Walk a day section of the South Downs Way from a station stop — Amberley to Arundel or Lewes to Southease, 3–5 h — rather than trying to see the whole 160 km (99 mi) ridge; entry is free, parking £3–8, and April–June and September give the driest, quietest going.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

The South Downs is a chalk ridge running about 160 km from Winchester in Hampshire to the cliffs at Eastbourne in East Sussex, designated a national park in 2010 and covered by roughly 1,627 km² of open downland, farmland and river valleys. There is no gate and no entrance fee: you walk in on public rights of way, most often straight off a train at Winchester, Petersfield, Amberley, Hassocks, Lewes, Southease or Eastbourne. The South Downs Way National Trail follows the ridge as a bridleway for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, and it is normally done in day sections rather than end to end. The chalk grassland is a managed habitat, grazed by sheep and cattle, and it holds ground-nesting birds and wildflowers that are easily damaged off the path.

Park rules

Drones, guides, camping and more
Dogs
Keep dogs under control and on a lead around livestock and ground-nesting birds, especially March to July.

Sheep and cattle graze the open downs; close gates behind you and give animals space.
Fires and BBQs
No open fires or disposable BBQs on the downs; they damage the chalk grassland.
Litter
Take everything home; bins are rare away from villages.
Cyclists and horses
The Way is a bridleway; give way to walkers and horses, and slow down on shared sections.
Drones
Check the national park authority's current guidance before flying; some sites and Nature reserves restrict them (check).check

Where to stay

Near the park

Lewes

A small town with pubs, hotels and a station on the eastern Downs.

Near the park

Arundel

Hotels and inns below the castle, at the end of a classic ridge walk.

Near the park

Chichester

A larger base with more choice, 20–40 min from the trailheads.

In the park

Village pubs and B&Bs

Rooms in downs villages; book ahead in summer and at weekends.

In the park

Campsites and barns

Camping and simple farm stays along the Way; wild camping needs landowner permission.

Safety

Mud and steep chalk after rain medium

Wear grippy boots; chalk and clay get slick in winter and after storms.

Exposed tops in wind and rain medium

Carry a windproof layer even in summer; the ridge is open and shelter is scarce.

Getting lost in mist low

Carry a paper map or offline map; the Way is waymarked but fog closes in fast.

Heat and lack of water low

Carry water; refill points are limited between villages.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • Many trailheads, viewpoints and village sections are reachable by car with short, level walks.
  • The ridge paths are unsurfaced, often steep and rough; not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs in the steeper sections.
  • Contact the National Trail officer for detailed surface and slope information before planning an accessible route.

Visiting lightly

  • Stay on the waymarked path; chalk grassland and ground-nesting birds are easily damaged.
  • Use the train and buses to reach the Downs rather than driving to every stage.
  • Buy food and drink in downs villages so the local economy benefits from the park.
  • Take all litter home; there are few bins on the ridge.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter South Downs?

Nothing. There is no entrance fee or gate for the national park, and the South Downs Way is free to walk. You pay only for parking (about £3–8 a day, 2026 estimate), trains and food.

What are the best hikes in South Downs?

For a day: Amberley to Arundel (about 11 km) or Lewes to Southease over Firle Beacon (about 12 km), both with stations at each end. For cliffs, walk the Seven Sisters from Seaford or Eastbourne. The full South Downs Way runs about 160 km from Winchester to Eastbourne over 7–9 days.

When is the best time to visit South Downs?

April to June and September: dry paths, long daylight and fewer people than midsummer. July and August are warm but busy, and winter is muddy with short days.

Do I need a car to visit South Downs?

No. Trains from London reach Winchester, Petersfield, Amberley, Hassocks, Lewes and Eastbourne, and buses link villages and the coast. A car helps for remote trailheads and parking is usually paid.

Can I camp on the South Downs?

Wild camping is legal only with the landowner's permission, which is easier to get in the Sussex section than in Hampshire (check). Otherwise use campsites, barns or village B&Bs.

Is the South Downs Way suitable for beginners?

Yes in day sections; the paths are waymarked but often steep and unsurfaced. Wear boots, carry water and a map, and build up distance before attempting the whole route.
