Know before you go

  • Shore entry from the sand at the southern end of the West End main street: the reef starts a few metres out, and the bottom is a mix of sand, sea grass and coral heads.
  • Go before about 09:30. Dive boats, water taxis and swimmers share the bay after that and boat lanes cut across the swimming area.
  • Reef shoes help on the rocky edges. Do not stand on coral, even dead-looking coral: stand only on sand.
  • There is no entry fee. The reef or marine-park fee (about US$10, check) is collected by dive shops and boat operators, not on the sand.
  • Masks, snorkels and fins rent in the village for roughly US$5–15 a day (2026 estimate, check). Weak swimmers should wear a vest.
  • Sand flies bite around dawn and dusk. Bring repellent and do not scratch the bites.

They help on the rocky edges but are not needed on the sand. Never stand on coral.

Is snorkelling at Half Moon Bay good?

Yes, for a shore snorkel. Reef and sea grass start a few metres from the sand, best before 09:30 when the water is clear and boats are few.

Do I need to pay to swim here?

No. The beach is public. Boat trips and dive shops add a marine-park fee (about US$10, check), and gear rental is extra.

Is it safe to leave things on the sand?

No. Petty theft happens on Roatán beaches: bring only what you need, or ask a bar or dive shop to hold a bag.

How long do I need?

About 75 minutes covers a snorkel and a drink. Allow 2 hours if you also eat lunch on the sand.

Is it good on cruise-ship days?

It gets busy from mid-morning. Go at 07:30 and leave by 10:30, or spend cruise days at a quieter reef trip.

Can kids swim here?

Confident swimmers can, with an adult in the water and a vest. There is no lifeguard and boats use the bay.
