Pinnacles protects the eroded remains of half a 23-million-year-old volcano, pulled about 195 mi (315 km) north along the San Andreas fault, plus two walk-through talus caves roofed by fallen boulders. It sits roughly two hours south of San Jose in San Benito County, close enough to the Bay Area for a day trip and quiet enough (over 200,000 visitors a year) to avoid Yosemite-scale crowds. The east and west entrances are not linked by any road, so the day is decided by which side you drive to: the east for the visitor center, Bear Gulch Cave and the reservoir loop, the west for Balconies Cave and the shortest route to the High Peaks.

- Allowed only in picnic areas, the campground, parking lots and on paved roads, on a leash of 6 ft or less. Not on any trail, and never left in a vehicle.
- Caves
- Bring your own flashlight or headlamp; phones are not enough. Bear Gulch Cave closes in part for bats, and Balconies Cave can close after heavy rain.
- Bicycles
- Paved roads only; bikes and motorcycles are not allowed on trails.
- Camping
- No backcountry camping. Overnight stays are at Pinnacles Campground outside the east entrance; the east side trails stay open 24 hours.
- Climbing
- No power drills for bolting, no routes above hiking trails where dropped gear could hit walkers, and brown or grey webbing is preferred.

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The east visitor center, the campground and the picnic areas are paved and step-free.
- The start of the Bench Trail and the South Wilderness route from the campground suit wheelchairs and strollers; most other trails do not.
- The west contact station has wheelchair-accessible restrooms and drinking water.
- Trails are unpaved, rocky and steep beyond the first flat sections; ask rangers at either station for the current easiest option.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on marked trails — the volcanic rock and the cave floors erode quickly.
- Do not approach or feed wildlife, and keep food sealed; condors and raccoons both suffer from handouts.
- Pack out all rubbish, including food scraps, since the caves and high trails have no bins.
- Book the campground rather than idling in the entrance queue; reserved sites include parking and cut the morning drive.

A private vehicle pays about US$30 for seven days, or about US$15 per person arriving on foot or by bike (2026 estimate). The US$80 America the Beautiful annual pass covers this park and other federal sites for a year.
What are the best hikes in Pinnacles National Park?
For most visitors the 2.2 mi Moses Spring–Rim Trail loop from the east side is the best value: Bear Gulch Cave, the reservoir and rim views in under two hours. Add Condor Gulch for High Peaks views, or take the 4.1 mi Juniper Canyon loop from the west side if you want the Steep and Narrow steps.
When is the best time to visit Pinnacles National Park?
March, April, October and November. Spring brings wildflowers and condor activity, autumn brings cool dry walking weather. July and August are too hot for the exposed trails, and Bear Gulch Cave is partly closed from about mid-May to mid-July for roosting bats.
Do I need a reservation to visit Pinnacles?
No entrance reservation is required. You do need to book Pinnacles Campground in advance, up to six months out, and parking at the trailheads fills by mid-morning on spring and holiday weekends.
Can I drive between the east and west sides of the park?
No. The two entrances are not linked by any road, so reaching the other side means a long detour around the park. Pick one side for the day: the east for Bear Gulch and the visitor center, the west for Balconies Cave and quick High Peaks views.
Are dogs allowed at Pinnacles?
Only in picnic areas, the campground, parking lots and on paved roads, on a leash of 6 ft or less. Pets are not allowed on any trail and cannot be left unattended, so plan for someone to stay with the dog.
How long do I need at Pinnacles?
A half day covers the Moses Spring loop and Bear Gulch Cave. A full day adds Condor Gulch or the High Peaks, and two days lets you walk both the east and west sides without repeating the drive.
