Tbilisiთბილისი
Tbilisi is a slope city: do the old town and the fortress in the morning, take the afternoon on Rustaveli's flat streets, and eat khinkali at midday — and keep the airport transfer booked, because most flights land in the small hours.

- Caucasus ↗The Armenia–Azerbaijan and Armenia–Türkiye land borders are closed; any route that crosses them is not a route, however short it looks.
- Caucasus ↗Georgia treats entry to Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia as illegal; entering that way can mean arrest or a ban when you next reach Georgia proper.
- Georgia ↗Many passports enter visa-free for a long stay; if yours needs a visa, apply only on the official e-visa portal.
- Georgia ↗Do not plan travel to Abkhazia or South Ossetia: crossing their boundary lines from Georgian-controlled land is treated as illegal entry, and many governments advise against it.
- Georgia ↗In Orthodox churches women cover their heads and shoulders and wear a skirt or a wrap; men remove hats and avoid shorts.
- Georgia ↗Carry Georgian lari in small notes for minibuses, markets and the metro card; cards work in most Tbilisi cafés and shops but not everywhere outside the capital.
- Kartli ↗Minibuses (marshrutkas) have little space for large bags: leave the big bag at the Tbilisi hotel and take a day pack.

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go
Overview
The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.
Tbilisi's sights sit along one river valley, and the old town climbs steeply up to the Narikala fortress. The failures are practical: a 04:00 landing with no room ready, a suitcase on the cobbles of Sololaki, and a church door you can't enter in shorts. Four clusters cover a first visit on foot, with a short taxi ride between them for a few lari.
Fits
- Food and wine trips
- Short city breaks with day-trips
- Travellers who like walking and views
Does not fit
- Strollers and wheelchairs (slopes and steps)
- Travellers who dislike hills
- Midday walkers in July
- 2 days
- Old town + Narikala, Freedom Square and Rustaveli
- 3 days
- Four clusters, mornings on the slopes, evenings on Rustaveli

- Don't confuse
- Old Tbilisi (Abanotubani, Sioni, Narikala) and Sololaki are neighbours on the left bank; Avlabari with Sameba Cathedral is across the river.
Hover, tap or tab to an area to see what it is like. Pins are sleep areas; arrows at the edge point to the airport.
Off the map: Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) (30–55 min by the usual route).
Where’s what, as a list:
- Old Tbilisi (Abanotubani, Sioni & Narikala): Morning cluster: the sulphur-bath district, Sioni Cathedral and the climb to Narikala; steep, cobbled, best before the heat.
- Sololaki & Freedom Square: Midday cluster: Freedom Square, the lanes of Sololaki and lunch; slopes and balconies, with shade from old houses.
- Rustaveli Avenue & Kashveti: Afternoon cluster: Rustaveli's flat boulevard, the Kashveti church and the museums; shaded by plane trees, the easiest walk in the city.
- Avlabari & Sameba Cathedral: Early-morning or late-afternoon cluster: the Holy Trinity Cathedral on the hill across the river; large, open, with dress rules at the door.
- Sleep area Rustaveli (central, flat): suits Families, older travellers, price band $$$.
- Sleep area Sololaki (old-town edge): suits Families, price band $$.
- Tbilisi International Airport (TBS), 30–55 min by the usual route.
Decide
The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.
You will like
- Sulphur baths and old balconies
- Wine and khinkali
- Views over the river
You will hate

Arrive & move
Getting in, getting around, and your bags
Arrive
Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.
Move
The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.
- Default
- Walk inside a cluster; taxi or ride-hailing car between clusters; the metro for the long axis.
- Passes
- No pass needed: a Metromoney card pays for itself after a few rides; ride-hailing is cheap for short hops.
- Last trains
- The metro stops around midnight; ride-hailing runs all night.
- Other modes

Luggage
Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.
Rule
- Lockers
- Few public lockers; hotels and guesthouses hold bags.
- Forwarding
- No forwarding culture: keep the big bag at the hotel for day trips.
- Dead zone
- Early-morning arrivals: ask the hotel to hold your room from the night before; otherwise a late check-in fee is common.

- Crossing: drivers rarely yield at unmarked crossings; use the lights.
- Political demonstrations on Rustaveli Avenue: avoid the crowd and keep away from riot police lines.
Red lines
- Orthodox churches: heads and shoulders covered for women, no shorts for men, no photos during services.
- Do not walk out of Georgian-controlled land toward Abkhazia or South Ossetia.
- Do not accept a driver's unpriced airport ride; use the app or agree the fare first.
Practical
- Toilets: cafés, malls and the metro; carry small change.
- Tap water is drinkable in most of the city; sulphur water in the old town smells but is not harmful.
