The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is a free, non-contiguous patchwork of federal, state and conservancy land running through Los Angeles and Ventura counties, between the San Fernando and Conejo valleys to the north and Malibu and the Pacific Coast Highway to the south. There is no admission gate and no timed entry: you pay for parking at California State Parks lots and for camping, not to enter. The range is chaparral — sage, ceanothus and oak stands — cut by canyon roads and threaded by the Backbone Trail, roughly 105 km of ridgeline between Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades and Point Mugu State Park at the western end. Because the parcels are separate and trailheads sit along canyon roads, a car is the practical way in; most visitors walk one section rather than the whole route. Summer brings heat inland and the year's highest wildfire risk, winter storms can wash out trails and trigger mudslides on canyon roads, and June fog often sits on the coast until midday. Spring and November give the best mix of mild weather, green hills and clear air.

Accessibility
- The King Gillette Ranch visitor centre and its grounds are reachable by car with level paths and accessible parking.
- Malibu Creek State Park has a paved road section from the entrance that suits wheels and strollers for the first stretch.
- Most ridge and canyon trails are steep, rocky and unshaded; not suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on marked trails — chaparral regrows slowly after fires and foot traffic kills it.
- Do not pick wildflowers or move rocks; the ecosystem is small and fragmented.
- Pack out all rubbish, including fruit peel, and keep food away from coyotes.
- Use the state park shuttle or carpool where offered; canyon parking is the main pressure point.

For a long day: the Backbone Trail, roughly 105 km end to end, usually walked in sections. Big Sycamore Canyon is the easy downhill option if you can arrange a pick-up at the coast.
