Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland is in the EU but not in the Schengen area; it sets its own entry rules and a Schengen visa is not valid for Ireland. Check Irish immigration for your passport.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland and the UK form the Common Travel Area, with no routine checks on the land border. Visitors who are not Irish or British must still meet UK rules (including the UK ETA where it applies) to enter Northern Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Driving is on the left; rural roads are narrow with hedges and few passing places.

Skellig Michael is a 218 m twin-peaked sandstone island 12 km off the Kerry coast, uninhabited since the monks left in the 12th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. A small community lived here from perhaps the 6th century, in beehive huts on a ledge above the sea, reached by 618 rough stone steps. Access is tightly capped: 15 licensed boats a day, 12 passengers each, May to September only, and the sea decides whether anyone sails at all. There are no toilets, no food, no water and no mobile signal.

Safety

Falls on the South Steps high

No handrail and a steep drop; wear grippy shoes, keep one hand free, and follow ranger and crew guidance on conditions.

Seasickness on the crossing medium

Take medication before boarding; look at the horizon, not at the deck or your phone.

Landing and re-embarking in a swell medium

Follow the crew's instructions exactly and keep both hands free for the boat.

No shelter, water or toilets on the island medium

Carry water, food, waterproofs and any medication; use the toilet in Portmagee before you sail.

Trip cancelled for sea conditions high

Have a Plan B ready before you reach the jetty; re-booking capacity in midsummer is limited.

Accessibility

  • There is no accessible landing, path or facility on the island; the steps rule out limited mobility.
  • Non-landing boat trips are the practical option for anyone who cannot climb.
  • The Skellig Experience in Portmagee is the accessible way to see the site's story.

Visiting lightly

  • Book with a licensed operator that respects the daily landing cap; the limit exists to protect the steps and the birds.
  • Take all rubbish back to the mainland, including food waste.
  • Keep your distance from nesting seabirds and never feed them.
  • Do not buy unofficial 'guaranteed landing' offers; they do not exist.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Skellig Michael?

There is no separate island entry fee. You pay the boat operator: expect about €140–160 per person for a landing tour in 2026, or about €60–70 for a non-landing trip. The Skellig Experience in Portmagee costs a few euro.

What are the best hikes in Skellig Michael?

There are only two real walks. The South Steps climb 618 old stone steps to the Monastery on the East Peak (1–1.5 h up, hard, no handrail). The Lighthouse Road follows the cliff base to the working lighthouse (about 45 min each way, moderate). The South Peak hermitage route is closed.

When is the best time to visit Skellig Michael?

June and July, when the days are longest and the sea is calmest — but that is also when boats sell out months ahead. May and September are quieter and still sailable. Boats run May to September only, and any trip can be cancelled for sea conditions.

Can I visit Skellig Michael without a boat?

No. The island is 12 km offshore, uninhabited and has no ferry, bridge or airstrip. The only access is a licensed boat from Portmagee, Derrynane or Ballinskelligs, and only 15 boats may land per day.

What happens if my boat trip is cancelled?

Operators refund or offer another date, but midsummer re-booking capacity is limited. Have a Plan B ready: the Skellig Experience in Portmagee, the Ring of Kerry, or a non-landing trip if the sea allows.

Are there toilets or food on Skellig Michael?

No. There are no toilets, no catering, no water supply and no mobile signal on the island or the crossing. Bring food, water, waterproofs and any medication, and use the facilities in Portmagee before you sail.
