Thetford Forest is a planted pine forest on the Norfolk–Suffolk border, not a fenced park: there is no entry fee, and you pay only for parking and activities. High Lodge is the one paid hub — about £2.20 per hour per car, capped at about £11.50 a day — with café, toilets, bike hire, playground and Go Ape. Everywhere else the Forestry England car parks along the A134 and A1065 (St Helen's, Two Mile Bottom, Lynford, High Ash, Great Hockham, King's Forest) are free, and waymarked trails run from each. The forest was planted from 1922 for timber after the First World War and is now managed for recreation and wildlife as well as wood; the Breckland heath edges, the Neolithic flint mines at Grime's Graves and the WWII Desert Rats camp at High Ash sit inside or beside the tree lines. Spring (March–May) is for woodlark song and dry tracks, September–October for colour and quiet; July–August are warm but the busiest, and High Lodge car parks fill by mid-morning in the school holidays. There is no camping in the forest and no accommodation inside it — sleep in Brandon, Thetford or the A1065 villages, and treat the forest as a half-day or full-day outing from those bases.
