Minuteman Missile National Historic Site preserves one launch control facility and one missile silo from the Minuteman II field that covered 13,500 sq mi of southwestern South Dakota from 1963 to 1991. Delta-01 is the only place in the country where you can ride an elevator 31 ft down into an intact launch control centre; Delta-09 is a glass-topped silo with an unarmed missile, open at the roadside. There are no trails and no backcountry — this is a two-stop drive between exits 116 and 131 on Interstate 90, and the whole visit turns on whether you hold a tour ticket.

How much does it cost to enter Minuteman Missile National Historic Site?
The visitor centre and the Delta-09 missile silo are free. The only paid element is the Delta-01 launch control tour: US$12 for adults and US$8 for ages 6–16 (2026 estimate). The America the Beautiful annual pass does not cover that tour fee.
What are the best hikes in Minuteman Missile National Historic Site?
There are none. The site is three roadside parcels with short flat walks — about 20–30 minutes at Delta-09 and the visitor centre grounds. For real hiking, drive 30–45 minutes to Badlands National Park or the Buffalo Gap National Grassland.
When is the best time to visit Minuteman Missile National Historic Site?
May, June and September: mild days, long light and tour slots that are easier to get than in July and August. Winter brings blizzards and I-90 closures; midsummer reaches about 38°C with little shade at the silo.
Do I need a reservation for the Delta-01 tour?
Yes. Tours are limited to six people and can be reserved up to 90 days ahead; there is no same-day availability. In summer they can sell out almost immediately, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.
How long do I need at the site?
About 1.5–2 hours without a tour (visitor centre plus Delta-09), or 3–4 hours with the 45-minute Delta-01 tour and the drive between exits 116, 127 and 131.
Can I get there without a car?
No. There is no public transport to any of the three parcels; each sits off a different Interstate 90 exit and you drive between them.
