  • South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
  • South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.

For some areas

Vinicunca is a mineral-striped ridge in the Cusco region at over 5,000 m, reached on foot in 1.5–2 hours from a dirt-road trailhead above Cusipata. It became a paid community attraction only around 2015–2016, and the day-trip model has not changed much since: most Cusco agencies arrive at the viewpoint between 10:30 and 11:00, so the site is either empty or crowded depending on the hour you walk. There is no national-park authority here — the gates, horses and camping rights belong to the herding communities along the approach — and the Red Valley next door offers the same geology with a fraction of the traffic. Treat it as a short acclimatised walk, not a trek, and only after two or three nights at 3,000–3,500 m.

Where to stay

Near the park

Cusco

The usual base; 3 h by road and the place to acclimatise for several days first.

Near the park

Cusipata

Small town on the route with basic hostels; lets you start the trail before the Cusco vans.

In the park

Camping near the trailhead

Flat ground on community land; ask permission and bring everything you need.

Safety

Altitude sickness at 5,000 m high

Spend at least two or three nights at 3,000–3,500 m first; turn back if you get a bad headache, nausea or breathlessness at rest.

Rapid weather change medium

Carry a shell, hat and gloves year-round; snow and hail are possible even in the dry season.

Getting stranded after the tours leave medium

Independent travellers should fix a return or arrange a pick-up; collectivos back to Cusipata mostly run from about 14:00.

Sun and cold medium

High-altitude UV burns fast; use sunscreen and sunglasses, and layer for freezing mornings.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The trailhead area and lower path are walkable at an easy pace, but there is no paved or wheelchair-accessible route to the viewpoint.
  • Horses cover the middle section; the final climb is steep, loose and on foot.

Visiting lightly

  • Pay the community fees at the gate; they are the main local income from the site.
  • Do not step on the coloured sediments or take rock samples.
  • Pack out all rubbish, including tissues, and use the toilets provided.
  • Choose small-group tours; 35-seat buses put the most pressure on the trail and the viewpoint.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Vinicunca?

The community entrance is S/10 per person, paid at the trailhead gate or included in a tour. The Red Valley has its own gate: S/10 on the left trail, S/5 on the right. A horse is about S/70 and a collectivo from Cusipata about S/20 one way. Prices are 2026 estimates; confirm on the day.

What are the best hikes in Vinicunca?

The main viewpoint trail is a 3–4 hour return walk from the trailhead, moderate apart from the altitude. The Red Valley loop adds 1.5–2.5 hours and has far fewer people. Longer options continue toward Ausangate over one to five days with a guide.

When is the best time to visit Vinicunca?

May to July is driest and clearest, with hard frost at dawn. April and September are good shoulder months. December to March is the wet season, when the dirt road and trail are muddy and tours are sometimes cancelled.

Can I visit Vinicunca without a tour?

Yes. Take a collectivo from Cusipata from about 03:00, walk up the marked trail, and arrange your return in advance because vehicles back to Cusipata mostly leave from about 14:00. With your own car the last hour is dirt road but no 4x4 is needed.

How do I avoid the crowds at Vinicunca?

Most guided groups reach the viewpoint between 10:30 and 11:00. Arrive before 08:00, or stay overnight nearby and walk up at first light; the site is quiet again after the vans leave in the early afternoon.

Do I need to acclimatise before Vinicunca?

Yes. The viewpoint is above 5,000 m. Sleep two or three nights at 3,000–3,500 m first, ideally in Cusco or the Sacred Valley, and do not go up if you have symptoms of altitude sickness.
