Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
- Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
- San Marino ↗San Marino is not in the EU; there are no border checks from Italy, and in practice you must meet Italy's (Schengen) entry rules to reach it. Check the official rules for your passport.
- San Marino ↗There is no entry stamp, but the tourist office can put an optional souvenir stamp in your passport.
- San Marino ↗San Marino is outside the EU's roaming area for some mobile plans; check before using data on the ridge, where Italian and Sammarinese networks overlap.

Overview
The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.
San Marino has no airport and no railway: the way in is a bus or car from Rimini, 25 km away, and most flights land at Rimini only in summer. The old town sits on the ridge of Monte Titano, steep, cobbled and full of coach groups from late morning. The trips that go wrong are the ones that arrive at noon in July, climb the towers in sandals, or plan a late landing at Rimini with no bus left. Four small walking areas cover a visit; Rimini is the usual bed.
Fits
- Short day-trips from Rimini
- Views and old-town walks
- Passport-stamp collectors
Does not fit
- Strollers and wheelchairs (steep, stepped streets)
- Travellers who need a beach or big-city nightlife
- Midday visitors on summer weekends
- 1 days
- Bus from Rimini, square and towers, back to Rimini in the evening
- 2 days
- One night on the ridge: towers at opening, Borgo Maggiore on the second morning
- 3 days
- Two nights: towers, Borgo Maggiore market, a slow day for the walls
- Don't confuse
- San Marino is a separate country inside Italy. Città di San Marino is its capital on the ridge; Borgo Maggiore is the town below, linked by cable car.
Hover, tap or tab to an area to see what it is like. Pins are sleep areas; arrows at the edge point to the airport.
Off the map: Rimini Federico Fellini Airport (RMI) (40–60 min by the usual route).
Where’s what, as a list:
- Piazza della Libertà & Palazzo Pubblico: Morning-only cluster: the square, the Palazzo Pubblico and the Basilica before the coaches; flat, paved and 30–45 minutes.
- Guaita tower & the ridge path: Mid-morning cluster: the first tower and its ramparts, the Wax Museum lane and the Passo delle Streghe path; steep, exposed and best before 11:00.
- Cesta tower & the upper ridge: Late-morning cluster: the highest tower and its arms museum, reached by a steep ridge path; small, exposed and only worth it in clear weather.
- Borgo Maggiore: Second-morning cluster below the old town: the market square, the sanctuary and the cable car; flat streets, fewer coaches, useful for a bed and an early start.
- Sleep area Borgo Maggiore: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.
- Sleep area Old town (Città): suits Families, price band $$.
- Rimini Federico Fellini Airport (RMI), 40–60 min by the usual route.

Essentials and accessEssentials
Essentials
- Paying
- Cards and contactless work in shops, cafés and restaurants; carry a few euros for small cafés, the cable car and tower ticket desks that ask for cash. San Marino uses the euro.
- Tipping
- Not expected; round up or leave 5–10% for good table service.
- SIM & data
- Install an eSIM before you fly. San Marino is outside the EU: check that your plan covers it.
- Plugs & power
- 230 V; two-pin round sockets (types F and L, also C).
- Drinking water
- Tap water is safe to drink.
- Toilets
- Cafés and the tourist office; public toilets are few.
- Opening hours
- Shops open late morning and close for a long lunch; towers close in the evening and in bad weather.
- Health
- Sun on the ridge in summer and cold in winter; travel insurance with medical cover.
- Accessibility
- Steep, cobbled and stepped: poor for strollers and wheelchairs; the cable car eases the climb from Borgo Maggiore.
- Laundry
- No self-service laundry near the old town: use your Rimini base.
- Emergency numbers
- 112; also 118 ambulance, 115 fire (check the tourist office leaflet).
Pack
- Shoes with grip for wet cobbles and ridge paths
- A warm layer: the ridge is cooler and windier than Rimini
- A hat and water bottle in summer
- A passport for the souvenir stamp
Survive
Safety basics, the lines not to cross, and practical habits that save the day.
Safety
- Paths between the towers are steep, uneven and slippery when wet: shoes with grip, and stay behind the low walls.
- Low cloud and fog can cover Monte Titano: check the forecast before you pay for the towers.
- Summer midday sun on the ridge has little shade: hat and water.
- Emergency: 112 works from any phone; also 118 for an ambulance and 115 for fire (check the tourist office leaflet).
Red lines
- Basilica and churches: cover shoulders and knees, no flash during services.
- Do not climb on the tower walls or the cannons.
Practical
- Toilets: cafés and the tourist office near the Palazzo Pubblico; carry small coins.
- Tap water is safe to drink.
Scams and red flags
Walk away if you see these
- Taxis or drivers at Rimini station quote a high fixed fare to San Marino: use the bus, or agree the price with a licensed taxi before you get in.
- Shops selling duty-free goods, watches and knives near the square have no fixed prices: compare before buying.
- Restaurant menus without prices in the square: ask the price of each dish before you order.
- Souvenir stamp stalls other than the official tourist office: the official passport stamp is only at the tourist office.
