Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
- Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
- Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
- Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Elm Lappwald is a nature park, not a gated reserve: roughly 470 km² of beech and mixed forest over the low limestone ridges of the Elm, Lappwald and Dorm, plus the farmland of the Helmstedt basin between them, east of Brunswick in Lower Saxony. There is no entrance, no ticket and no single visitor centre — you drive to a trailhead car park and walk in. The Elm holds one of the largest connected broadleaf forest blocks in northern Germany; the Lappwald on the eastern side is quieter and less waymarked. The old inner-German border line, megalith graves and the Schöningen Spears found in the nearby open-cast mine sit in the same landscape, so a wet day has somewhere to go. Come April–October, start before 10:00 at weekends, and treat the park as a set of separate trailheads rather than one destination.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The nature park has no single visitor centre; access depends on the trailhead you choose.
- Village car parks and the flatter paths around Räbke and Schöningen suit wheelchairs and pushchairs.
- The Elm ridge paths are unsurfaced with short climbs; not suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Use the free trailhead car parks and walk or cycle in rather than driving between viewpoints.
- Buy food and fuel in Schöningen, Helmstedt or the villages so the park edge benefits.
- Keep to marked paths to limit erosion and disturbance in the beech stands.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Elm Lappwald?
Nothing. Elm Lappwald is a nature park, not a gated national park: there is no ticket, no barrier and no entry fee. You pay only for parking where a village lot charges, for food and for any guided walk you book. Most forest car parks are free.
What are the best hikes in Elm Lappwald?
The standard walk is a 2–3 hour loop from Räbke into the Elm beech forest. For a full day, traverse the Elm high ground between villages (4–6 hours). The Lappwald on the eastern side has quieter, straighter tracks but fewer waymarks, so carry a map.
When is the best time to visit Elm Lappwald?
April to October. April and May bring leaf-out and long days, September and October are dry and quiet midweek with autumn colour. Avoid January and February, and start early on summer weekends because the trailhead car parks fill after 10:00.
Do I need a car?
Practically, yes. The park has no station and buses into the villages are limited, especially at weekends. Train to Brunswick or Helmstedt, then hire a car or take a taxi for the last 15–45 minutes.
Is Elm Lappwald the same as the Harz?
No. The Harz is a separate, higher range about an hour south. Elm Lappwald is low forested limestone ridges east of Brunswick, with gentler walking and far fewer visitors.
Can I camp in the forest?
No. Wild camping and bivouacs are not allowed. Use campsites or guesthouses in Räbke, Eitzum, Schöningen or Helmstedt.
