Waterton Lakes is the Canadian half of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995 and a biosphere reserve since 1979. It is small — 505 km², roughly the size of the Island of Montreal — and it packs prairie grassland, aspen groves, subalpine forest and alpine tundra into the southwest corner of Alberta, where the Rockies meet the plains. The townsite sits on Upper Waterton Lake, which crosses into Montana. Most visitors come for the hiking: Crypt Lake is the famous one, Carthew-Alderson the long ridge walk, and Bear's Hump the 30-minute climb above town. There is no bus into the park, so you drive.

Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The townsite, marina and shoreline path are flat and walkable.
- Bear's Hump is steep gravel and stone steps; there is a disabled parking spot at the trailhead but the trail itself is not suitable for limited mobility.
- Red Rock Canyon's short loop is partly boardwalk and gravel; the canyon floor is uneven.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on trails to protect alpine tundra, which recovers slowly.
- Pack out all rubbish; bins are limited outside the townsite.
- Keep your distance from bison, bears and sheep — feeding or crowding wildlife changes their behaviour.
- Buy supplies in Cardston or Pincher Creek where you can; goods in the townsite carry a premium.

How much does it cost to enter Waterton Lakes National Park?
A daily adult entry is about CAD 11–12 (2026 estimate) and is bought at the gate or online. If you plan to visit several Parks Canada sites in a year, the annual Discovery Pass (about CAD 75–80) is usually cheaper. Rates change yearly, so check the current fee before you travel.
What are the best hikes in Waterton Lakes National Park?
Crypt Lake (about 9 km one way, hard, boat access) and Carthew-Alderson (about 16 km point to point, hard) are the two classics. For something shorter, Bear's Hump is a steep 30-minute climb above town, Bertha Falls is 5.2 km return, and Red Rock Canyon has a 15–30 minute loop.
When is the best time to visit Waterton Lakes National Park?
July and August have everything open but the most people and the highest prices. Late June and September give you the same trails with fewer crowds; some high routes stay under snow into July, so check trail conditions at the visitor centre.
Do I need a reservation for Crypt Lake?
You need a seat on the Shoreline Cruise, which drops hikers at the trailhead and picks them up. Book the boat in advance for July and August. There is no separate trail permit.
Can I walk into Glacier National Park in Montana?
Not legally at the trail crossing. Carry your passport and use the Chief Mountain Highway border crossing, which is open May to October only.
Is there bus service to Waterton?
No. There is no bus into the park; you need a car, or a tour from Calgary or Lethbridge.
Where should I stay?
The townsite has lodges, motels and the Townsite Campground, all of which book out for July and August. Belly River Campground is first come, first served. Cardston and Pincher Creek have motels 30–60 minutes away.
